I decided my story shall be set in Terrathalis. It's quite a large planet, mostly ground covered with enormous forests of mostly confierous trees. The trees grow to outstanding heights and would dwarf even redwoods from here.

There is a lot of underground seas and oceans supplementing most of the water of the place, with many large settlements digging deep to reach consistant water supplies.

Magic in the land is highly unstable, and costly to use, casting magic means drawing energy from somewhere else, this can draw from the life forms around the caster, the caster themselves in various ways, or from the very land. Abuse of magic in previous eras has led to the planet lacking in stability. There are regularly earthquakes and collapses in the ground, or cases of vast areas of trees rotting from the inside and collapsing into the surrounding areas.

There are several political factions based around the use of magic, many opposing it but others believing magic is required to stabilise the planet and ensure it renews itself correctly.

The story will probably be set after a secondary magical collapse. Magical collapses are where the users of magic grow too much for the planet to accomidate and becomes highly unstable. This is usually after a period of vrey few magical incidents when people grow complacent and take up the art again without careful consideration. After a collapse, it's often the cause of a few vigilantes to hunt down as many casters as they can and make them pay for their crimes against the land.
