The only thing is, there's no way that they are actually going to partition Iraq - there's no way you'd get all the groups to agree to it. Let's just say for the sake of arguement that we break it down into three seperate nations based on culutural and religious groups - Sunnistan, Shiastan, and Kurdistan v2.0.

The first thing that would have to be negotiated is how to distribute the oil revenue? The largest oil reserves would lie in Sunnistan - and the Shiastanis and Kurdistanis would never agree unless the oil revenue was somehow more equitably divided up. In fact, the Kurdistanis would have virtually NO oil at all if the borders were drawn to make the groups as inclusive as possible.

But there are two much more significant problems than oil revenues here as well.

1.) Just because an area is majority Shia, does not mean that there are no Kurds or Sunnis living there. Verily, it is because these groups are so intermingled that we see Sunni-Shia violence, Shia-Kurd violence, and Kurd-Sunni violence. How arrogant would it be to actually divide up these groups on a map, when they aren't neatly divided in reality?

2.) There are WAY MORE THAN 3 DISTINCT GROUPS IN IRAQ. In addition to what I listed above, we are also seeing growing incidents where the violence is Shia on Shia, Sunni on Sunni, or Kurd on Kurd. Most of the three major groups can be subdivided further, and the dislike between subgroups can be at times more intense than the dislike between the major groups. So if the goal of partitioning would be to reduce the inter-group fighting (and what other purpose would there be to such a proposal) then this idea would likely fail to accomplish it's primary goal.
