That's surprising - with a few more points to splash around, and the ever-lethal traps (which is one of the better class abilities in the game), a plain thief should do pretty well with a few select items. Nothing fancy, these will do: Ring Of Air Control, a decent backstabbing weapon (+2 or better Shortsword/Longsword/Katana), plenty of points in Set Traps and a good Hide/Move Silent score. Sure, you have to be craftier - you can't just charge in like a fighter - but a solo thief used well can be devastatingly effective.

A thief is particularly lethal once the Boots of Speed are obtained. (Set traps, run up, backstab, run away, hide again and backstab after the baddies walk through the traps.)

But I'd say the hardest character to solo would be a plain old fighter. Absolutely no way of buffing or healing besides potions.

Thieves RULE! With the [snip] you are almost invinceible, I killed Jon Irenicus in Suldanessellar yesterday by only using a few [snip] (Im playing a solo assassin/mage multiclass, 30/21)

[ToB AND the XP cap removed, all in one post in the SoA-only forum... Must be a new record.] -Tal

Halfling Swashbuckler goes all the way for me. I completed BG1 six times wit the same thief and gave him all the books so when I imported him he absolutely rocked.

Can't say too much without bringing TOB into it, but even within SOA perameters they're fantastic duel wielders, and with something like Celestial Fury in one hand and Cutthroat in the other, well nuff said.....

The hardest may not be a theif but a theif may be the most boring, because you have to backstabb the whole way through the game.

Swashbucklers never use backstab for the simple reason that they don't have it.

Soloing with a thief is just as easy as... Can't think of anything that easy.

It's been so long a time I last played Baldur's Gate I might confuse this with something else, but high level thieves can use magic scrolls and stuff.

I think that thief skills are needed when soloing!
Any multiclass thief would do nicely!

    No, they can't.
Yes, you might be confusing it with the expansion.

They're not, but it's nice to have them.
