Some people said that about Safana, like she's too hard to get or something but I don't see how that's possible because you can get her quite early and she's pretty good???

My dream party of NPCs who are a bit out of the way but available early on in the game:
    Shar-Teel
    Coran
    Viconia
    Safana
Just add Imoen and the PC and tada! Instant kickass party.

Depends on what sort of party I'm running, but as a rule, I always try to keep Imoen in my party wherever possible for story reasons. Other party members I turn to time and again:

    Good:

Khalid: As an earlier poster stated, if played and equipped properly, Khalid is a very effective NPC.

    Evil:

Kagain: He's a one dwarf wrecking crew

Montaron: He's very versatile and as pointed out, has a good soundset if your rep's low enough.

    Shar-Teel: My favorite tank.

Imoen: Fun to have around and a very good thief. She can also be a mage if the need arise.

    Yeslick: My favorite cleric.

The problem most people have with Safana is by the time most parties would get to her, you will have already passed by multiple just as good, if not better, thieves.

I wont even mention Minsc because he is on a whole 'nother level.

Khalid- All my summons took Sarevok's damage, but all the damage came from Khalid, the best good fighter.

Kivan- Great archer with the strength to tank.

Xan- Enchanters are just plain fun to play... Sure he is possibly the most annoying character, but it's fun to watch a mage with about no direct damage spells own everyone... and the moonblade looks cool.

Coran - because of how strong archery is in this game.

    Mine are...

Minsc and Imoen - the two NPCs I don't even consider leaving out of my party.

Viconia - my favorite cleric, even though her Wisdom in BG1 isn't great (and her portrait is kinda lame, too).

    My top 3 are:
1)Imoen - for story continuity, and she is a good thief
2)Ajantis - I like paladins and he is the only one available.
3)Kivan - best archer in the game. I pick him over Coran because he levels faster, is available from the beginning, and can tank if required.

Minsc is the man. I have tried tons of party configurations, but I am always happiest when I have Minsc with me.

Imoen is another that I almost always take with me.
