I got a grey reputation once -- a zero ... I never did figure out if the poster liked what I said or was pissed at me.

It was probably a neg rep. Neg rep registers a deduction as half your current rep score, rounded off. So a positive-rep from a person with 2 rep points would boost you 2 points, that same person's neg-rep would deduct 1 point. The poster in question was likely new (with a rep score of 1) and since the system can't deduct you half a point, it rounded down and registered as a 0 (which is gray).

Nah, I think the poster had a zero rep -- could have been either.

I got that the other day and looked in the FAQ. Turned out to be neutral.

What is a neutral rep? "I feel indifferent to your post"? I guess not, or I would have them in earnest by now... :)

I've had one or two of those. It's a rep hit from a user with a rep power of zero.

I haven't read through the whole thread, but I'll just say that I've never felt the need to negative rep anyone, even when I thought that they were being a tool. Negative repping is rather passive aggressive, just a cheap way to strike back against someone when you either don't have the courage to take them on in public, or the self-control to just shut up. When I get a negative rep which is signed, I usually bring it up in public. If it's anonymous, I just ignore it. I've got better things to do than trouble myself with such nonsense.

I do give positive reps for good posts, though.

I'm going to have to try harder, it seems!
