Yeah Valygar is a great replacement for Keldorn, unfortunately Valygar is specialized in katanas too, so you will have to split the few good katanas you come across with him. If you want two dual-wielding fighters, use Minsc with maces and axes, then replace Keldorn with Mazzy. She is a great backup fighter plus she can do some serious damage with short bows, especially to mages.

[IMG] I'd been thinking either valygar or haer'dalis but i think i don't need any more magic. About valygar sincew he is stalker he cant wear greater than studde leather armour but i think i remember him having a low ac whci hhe couldn't have got with base studded leather. Does he start with special armour or does the greater than studdded leather rule not apply to him.

Valygar can have a great AC, even if he is just a Stalker!

    Shadow Dragon Armor: 1
    Dexterity Bonus: 1 - 4 = -3

Then add other AC lowering equipment and you could end up around -7 (I remember Imoen having that in my last game).

Yep, AC 2, Immunity to Charm and 25% resistance to fire, acid and magic damage! It makes his AC -2 when you get him.

Extremist, my apologies. I actually misremembered a recent post by Ragusa who stated Mazzy and Keldorn were two of his favorites. You posted below him, hence my confusion. For the record, you did state that you usually dump Keldorn before chapter 3. I assume you take him in chapter 2 because of the quest which you said you liked to solve them all.
Would have posted sooner but have been unavailable for several weeks due to travel and installation of a new computer. Future house shopping might keep me unavailable in days to come, but I didn't want to drag your rep through the mud. :)

Now lev 7 mage saving up for robe of vecna. Soon the power of a kensai mage shall cleave my enemies into burnt crispy bits with a tango aftertaste.

Yeah...skip the robe of veca...it is WAY unbalanced. Casting time is just too low.

    Otherwise, good luck!

[IMG] What's so bad about a low casting time. A low casting time is good. Just let the missiles fly.

[IMG] Auger means it makes the game too easy with spells of a casting time of 4 or less being cast instantaneously (this includes fireball and several other very powerful spells). I, personally, disagree, but its your perogative...

I shall offer my opinion and my party.

I have never scrupled to use over-powered items. I have never seen handicapping myself as being a fun challenge, as opposed to tougher enemies and such.

    My Party:

    Me: 9/12 Swashbuckler/Mage.
Minsc: The oh so mighty tank.
    Valygar:Tank, Backstabber should need arise.
Viconia: Hot. Nice cleric as well.
    Mazzy: archer.
    Cernd: Tank/offense/defense caster.

I enjoy my party and believe I selected very well.

[IMG] I just decided to go for the de'arnise keep as i forgot about it in chapter 2. Encountered my first troll. Minsc and valygar charged and the troll was hit by valygars acid and minsc's fire (stonefire). I have valygar because i dropped keldorn at the advice of this topic's replies.

[IMG] My latest party is going like so; I decided to go for a more fighter-based approach to make use of all the cool weapons/armour etc found later in the game and in TOB rather than my magic-based team of last time. I also wanted a brazen do-gooder party so I dont have to worry about reputation so much. Here is what I plan my ultimate do-gooder party to be...

Sebastian - PC RAnger using halberds, scimitars, longbows and later flails with a young Woody Allen portrait. Heh...
Keldorn - Only used him once before but remember him being great.
Mazzy - Archer supremo and unlikely arse-whupper when armed with a giant girdle.
Anomen - Dont really like the git, but he's not evil like Vicky and lasts a bit longer fighting powerful enemies who can hit you regardless of AC.
Aerie - The only romance option you could take home to meet your mum and a good backup mage/cleric.
Nalia/Imoen - Nalia can fill in until I get my sis back; both are about the same power when it comes to magic gubbins but no self-respecting good guy could leave his little sibling languishing in Bodhi's maze (I'll ditch Nalia before I leave for Brynlaw).

    I'm using:
    Fighter 1: PC multi-class ranger/cleric
Fighter 2: Keldorn (for two-handed swords, Dispel Magic, true sight)
Fighter 3: Anomen (for the romance. Don't know WHAT I see in him....)
Fighter 4: Mazzy -> In TOB I take.... *cough, cough*)
    Thief, Mage: Imoen

For NPC five I'm thinking about creating my own specialist mage. In general, I hate the fact that normal mages get so little spells; I've already played a sorcerer, I'm addicted to them, and want to try something new. Furthermore, I'm considering replacing Anomen with something, ANYTHING, else, before his voice drives me to suicide -- preferably one of the female romance options, and I'll change my main character's gender and restart the game (I'm not that far along anyway). I'm trying for a more fighter-based party this time, though. I would also like to keep Keldorn, to be honest.

    Advice?

Jaheira's a strong replacement for Anomen. She's an equally good fighter, gives you about as much healing for your buck, and also gets a couple of killer druid-only spells (insect plague and ironskin). Her romance is complex and interesting too.

Viconia's a better cleric than either of them and also an interesting romance, but she's a much worse fighter so if you're wanting a more fighter-based party, Jaheira's your woman. (Aerie'd be your distant third choice--her magical skills are great, but she dies more than anyone else in the game and can't fight her way out of a paper bag, plus her romance is short and rather boring.)

Problem with Jaheira as a replacement for Anomen (as I tend to use him as backup if Im using, say, Cernd, as my main healer or if my PC is a druid) is lack of Restoration spells. Perhaps a more skilled gamer than I could make do with just the scrolls, but I find I need more than that.
