What's this glowworm got to do with darkness (or fog)?

 

We lost the torch about three pages back and have had to do with other things.

 

A glowworm is more non-humanoid friendly, for those SPers like Felinoid, The Magpie and HB.

When young, I am sweet in the sun.
When middle-aged, I make you gay (happy).
When old, I am valued more than ever.
What am I?

Its from Alice in Wonderland, I believe. The Mad Hatter asks Alice... I don't know the answer, but this is the source.

And Lewis Carroll wrote it.

 

Quills?

 

Hmm, Harbourboy is close to one of the answers but I don't think that Poe was really famous for his writing desk. The Poe answer that is normally given for this one is "because Poe wrote on both".

Kuemper's is one of the possible answers - often expanded upon to say they both have inky quills.

Carroll included the following author's note in one of the reprint editions.

"Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter's Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer, viz: `Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!' This, however, is merely an afterthought; the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all."
