To be fair, even in the current D2, you don't HAVE to dual wield as a barbarian. In fact, I usually go with a shield for all of my classes.

No and you can wear heavy armor, but the setting of the character itself is far from a knight archetype. It's rather Germanic berserks/ vikings inspired. Paladin was that type of character. Though personally I didn't like the idea of setting paladins temple in a jungle where they parade in full plates all day long, kinda doesn't go in hand with tropical climate :D
No that lack of such character will ruin the game; but somehow beachdoctor /monk seem a bit out of place for dark world of diablo, fighter-type in chainmail/plate would go much better with the mood of the game, at least imo.

OUt of curiosity, why do you refer to the witch doctor as "beachdoctor"?

Based on the classes presented so far, I'm likely to start with the tropicalparadisedoctor, personally. My next choice would be the lemon hunter.

Does a lemon hunter hunt lemons due to scurvy?

I imagine fresh fruit would be hard to find in hell.

Also, I would totally play the game if it had classes like beachdoctor and lemon hunter. I prefer melee, though, so my preference would go to the shaolin preacher or bluntmaster. To each his own, I guess.

Lemon juice in the eyes of any demon is certain to make them cry.

My all time favorite class though has to be the Abyssal Baker. Those habanero meatballs launched into the gullet of a baddy are about as overpowered as anything. Fingers crossed that we'll see this gourmet chef of darkest evil in an expansion.

I guess that would really be an Abyssal Baker, if he makes meatballs instead of buns. I hope there will be a melee option with him too, though. Hacking through the legions with his home made demonic bread sounds like a lot of fun. Setting traps with quick rising hellbuns, which become so volatile during the rising process that the merest of tremors will set them off in a conflagration of devilyeast and dough.

In the Abyss, a place of chaos, their bakers bake using meat due to the scarcity of breaded goods.

Trying to get a little more on topic... Bioware has stated that they felt that classes like the necromancer really couldn't be improved upon from Diablo 2. That said, I would love to see the necromancer added, without any signficant changes, in an expansion. Necro was easily my favorite class in D2, and I would happily play this class in D3. I guess I can hope....

While at it, they also be honest that Diablo3 really couldn't be improved upon from Diablo 2. But that's not a reason to not publish it, right? Lame excuses there.
To continue my litany of whine I have a good reason to believe characters will not be as good as in d2.

Litany of whine? Boy, have you found the right place, sir! :D

What are your good reasons? I'm already inclined to agree with you, I think - but I'd like to hear.

Truth be told, I don't really give a rip what they CALL the classes. It's all about the gameplay and the skill usage. A rose by any other name... and all that. If they called the D2 paladin a knight, undead hunter, etc, instead, but kept everything else the same, I don't think anyone would have cared. Similarly, if they changed barbarian to berserker, or something of the like, no major difference. Or if they replaced the assassin name with rogue or thief.

So it actually doesn't really matter to me what they call the class. I prefer substance over style. What my toon is called by the game is far less important that what I see on the screen in terms of gameplay. I love D2, and while I don't know if I will enjoy D3 as much, that conclusion will not be based on whatever they happen to call the characters. Unbalanced skills, poor game interface, not much eye candy on the screen - that's what would cause me to not like it as much as D2. After 10 years, I expect some significant improvements!

I'm also a bit surprised at the lack of tank-ish type class. As said, there's an ocean of their kind out there, it wouldn't be very restricting implementing one. Despite lack of heavy armor, barbarians seem to be the prime brutes of D3. They're described as an opposite of a fragile monk class.
As for holy, righteous tightpants, i believe monk covers that very well (unfortunately). I do find it sad that they are entwined with a deity and the side of good without exception. Considering they say they based them on PnP RPG's, what happened to their neutrality?

    Jamaica voodoo, man!

Edit: Damn, why can't those recent post links bring me to the end of the thread?
I just noticed this has already been done > "tropicalparadisedoctor".

Wait a second... Barbarians aren't going to be able to wear heavy armor? Has that been announced? I did hear that they were revamping the weapon system in D3, so that certain classes received certain bonuses for using specific weapons. So while you could have your monk walking around with a battle axe, the penalties you'd receive for wielding it probably wouldn't be worth it. OTOH, I heard nothing about armor restrictions, especially for the barbarian class.

Well, there's really no alignments in the Diablo series... You are fighting the Prime Evils, and so by default, everyone kind of has to be good.
