Am I the only one who thinks it a bit odd that Obama's gift to the leader of one of the US's greatest allies is something Brown could probably get from Amazon?

    <insert "it's the American way" joke>

Yea; that gift really was very lame.

It was beyond lame, it was almost a direct insult.
Just because the british have sided with & stood beside us is no reason to treat them as if they will always be by our side no matter how we snub them.

    **edit**
Well obama has decided to drop the telepromptors.
Does this mean that he is going to wing it from now on?
NO, he now has a giant tv screen at the back of the room to read from.
    http://www.breitbart.tv/html/304123.html

So, again, if he is so great of an orator, why does he need to have his scripts feed to him line by line?

Too bad we didn't have YouTube tags in the Bush era... but seriously, I think everyone got the point by now that amazingly, Obama isn't superhuman and that he makes the kind of mistakes that normal people are expected to make, as opposed to Bush's, which were a few degrees below what could normally be expected. So how about focusing on actual politics instead of just posting one silly video after another? This isn't Whatnots, after all.

I don't see anyone claiming that Obama even owns a cape, let alone uses it.

The "Obama is Jesus!" meme is yet another in a series of nonsensical memes the right has been pushing since last year's campaign as a means of dismissing his supporters as mindless sheep. Yet it's only people on the right who give this more significance than it deserves. There aren't any more people out there who think Obama can do no wrong than Bush had. I would say significantly less so.

We knew we were voting for a fallible, mistake-prone mortal, believe me - they all are. We just happen to think he's the best one we've had to choose from in quite some time.

The problem that I see is that people think Obama is the "Second Coming", when in fact he might only be the fifth (I'll hedge my bets on who's three and four). So given the impossible task he has ahead of him, the pot-shots from his detractors aren't really surprising.

As had been stated previously, we put up with 8 years of potshots at bush, we are just returning the favor. :)

Lets look at some of obama's promises.
Well no, what he is saying is that he will cut the yearly deficit by half measured against the bloated deficit of this year with the unprecented stimulus and bailout plans added in, as noted here at politifact: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-m...a/obama-promises-cut-deficit-half-four-years/
As far as the actual deficit, obama's administration will see it almost double by the end of his term and 2.5-3 times what it currently is in 10 years.
    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-m...regg-says-obamas-budget-doubles-national-deb/
So even blaming bush for 1.2 Trillion dollars of the debt doesn't change the fact that obamas administration will see the greatest increase of the national debt of any president in history.

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-m...regg-says-obamas-budget-drives-national-debt/

Obama is raising the debt-to-GDP to unprecedented levels.

Only during the greatest war on the planet have we ever had a higher Debt-to-GDP, is the hope & change you were looking for?

    So what, you say?
We will end up with another true "great depression" not the little one we are experiencing now(forget about 8-10% unemployment, say hello to 25% like in the GD).

I'd be glad to debate this with you, my friend, Martaug. Why does the projected deficits carry out past an Obama regime, which may be now less than four years? And a fulll ten years instead? Gregg would be the first to remark on this - it's because of healthcare reform. The repubilcans wish to side-step this issue, and leave it essentially as it is. Most Americans are unhappy with the current system and want it fixed. And this by the way, was an issue that Gregg could have impacted had he decided to help Barack on his cabinet, instead of bailing on him as he did.

I believe that Obama should leave heathcare out of his current budget, which would reduce it drastically and that we should debate the expense as a separate issue.

If GWB was willing to leave that Iraq War out of the regular budget because he was not honest enough to include it in the real numbers, then Obama should do the same. Let's have the debate about healthcare as something by itself. It's that meangingful.

You are an employer, Martaug. How much would it save you in time and money if you no longer had to jack with this issue?

I already don't have to mess with it.
Everybody i employ is either A) a family member(my younger brother & his wife) or B) a subcontractor.
By using subs, you make them deal with all the paperwork.
That way the only insurance i have to bother with is the extended family plan we have.
Whenever you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone you have to do it.:thumb:

Oh yeah, i have no idea why they figure it out to 10 years:confused: but all of the figures from the gov't & obama use this format.
I actually was hoping maybe you knew. :)
It really doesn't make since as you have pointed out he will either be gone in 4 years or 8 years, so why figure for 5 & 10??

That's good business sense. It's little wonder you are successful. I wish some of the larger corporations I have worked for would have that kind of sense.

It is because of Healthcare reform that the budget is carried out to ten years. Obama's reform woud be very costly to implement. But it is the hotkey issue for many of us. This debate is really going to be about healthcare reform, mark my words, Martaug. I have listened to what Judd Gregg has had to say about Obama's budget and that's what he keeps going back to - the cost of healthcare.

It think that for Obama healthcare reform will be what Social Security reform was to GWB. Whether or not he will succeed is another issue.

Typically budgeted items are in five year increments. When a new budget comes out for the military it includes both short term (this FY) and long range -- which usually goes out five years. For a large project, anticipating double that timeframe is not unusual.

That's not just the military - it's all of government. Every year in the summer - usually either July or August (i.e., just prior to the start of the next fiscal year) - all major government programs are required by federal law to release a document called a Budget Estimate Submission (BES). One of the main requirements of this report is to specify funding required over the next five years. If there are funding requirements beyond five years, you need to call them out too, but funding beyond five years is not expected to be exact and can be more easily changed. The funding numbers that cover the next five years are termed to be in the "BES Window", and you need a really good reason to adjust them, unlike the funding numbers outside of the BES Window.

As for 10 year estimates - sorry, I got nothing.

I bow to your more extensive knowledge in this. I've only dealt with a small section of government in the past (well, maybe not so small) and I know you're actively involved.

DR, I've seen clips of Obama in public appearances, and of people being interviewed about him. That's worship, not simple appreciation. You see that for rock stars, pop icons, and religious figures (alive and dead), and it is rarely based on a rational assessment of their worth or achievements.

    You've got to be kidding.

NOG, I've seen clips of Bush / Clinton / Reagan / Kennedy / Hannah Montana in public appearances, and of people being interviewed about him. That's worship, not simple appreciation. Bush had his own cable news channel that practically did that 24/7. You see that for rock stars, pop icons, and religious figures (alive and dead), and it is rarely based on a rational assessment of their worth or achievements.

A few over-enamored fans on TV does not a messiah make.

Name one politician who doesn't have at least some supporters who think the sun shines out their ass. You can't. Bush had TONS of hero worship, and so did Clinton. Don't even get me started on Reagan. Do you remember anyone saying "Dubyamassiah" in 2004? I don't. So I'm not sure what your point is. I say it's nonsense because 1) you're exaggerating the extent and relevance of it and 2) he's the President of the United States, for crying out loud...of course he's going to get that, even as a candidate. Ron Paul even had that. They all do. Doesn't make the "messiah" nonsense any less silly.
