Goes back to my perception of Bards that they're total fun, and must haves, during tabletop. But they can feel underwhelming during combat heavy CRPs.

That D&D movie actually does a pretty good job of showing that dichotomy. Chris Pine's bard character is usually useless during a lot of the action scenes, but it's his planning and wits that gets them out of a lot of jams.

He could have been a relic from earlier editions where this was not possible.
Although in my group the cleric would not memorize more than one or two Cure spells per spell level unless the party was really beaten up and they needed to take a couple days for healing. In which case the cleric would memorize ONLY Cure spells and cast them immediately when the memorization session was over, then re-memorize his previous spells.
Memorization also took a lot more time than in the Infinity Engine games. It was more like the Gold Box games.
Agreed. They aren't powerhouses in combat, but good support characters, a role that is often underwhelming in CRPGs. Also the non-combat roles are often neglected in CRPGs, hence why the Rangers seem so underpowered in 3E games like Icewind Dale II or Neverwinter Nights I or II. It didn't help that they needlessly nerfed the hit die of the rangers, which should have been left at D10. Heck, I also thought that monks should have a D12 hit die since they are armorless martial arts masters that know how to take a hit.

I haven't seen it yet, need to get my rear out to a theater. But yeah, the thing I liked most about 4E was the resolve to give the classes the power they needed to fulfill the roles they always had. Bards lost a little with not having near-endless bardic inspirations with no defined time limits, but the other abilities they gained made up for it IMHO. My longest-played 4E character was a bard/leader/healer. For fun I made her a Drow Eilistraee worshiper who just wanted to produce the music for others to dance for Eilistraee to.

Bad habit, I started chatting about not knowing what I was talking about and everyone had to inform me. D

I didn't know there was a new movie out, I thought you guys were talking about this one:
    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0190374/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2
and I couldn't figure out what you meant about a bard. I just wrote it off as only having seen the movie once over 20 years ago.
