The visuals look pretty generic, as does the seemingly MMO-esque system. The DM mode could turn out to be interesting, but between slightly customizable settings in a game engine and full blown VTTs, my friends and I generally choose the latter when it comes to roleplaying, even if we're limited to 2D tokens and other static imagery.

Btw, is anyone else bothered by the horribly generic name of this game? Every time I read it I have the feeling I'll forget it by tomorrow. The fact that there's a Tales of the Sword Coast already doesn't help much.

Oh, yeah, add the name to the list of generic things in this game. :shake:

Woops - didn't see the news thread. Oh well.

I will wait for reviews. Normally I don't buy games unless they have an 80 or above rating, but if this one is at least 70 I'll pick it up, just to get my fix. :)

    Also, I HATE YOU INTERPLAY.

Reviews with scores are such a useless metric...

Am I the only one that thinks that the gameplay in this trailer looks a lot like it came straight out of a Dragon Age game?

Doesn't remind me specifically of Dragon Age, but then again, Dragon Age didn't really have a horribly unique combat system.

Is it just me, or did this one come out of nowhere?

    Not that I'm complaining.
    Never 'nuff D&D games.

I can't say I agree with that. Most of the D&D games from the last decade have been a pretty big disappointment for me, and I think they aren't doing any wonders for the reputation of the actual game. Back in the day, these games seemed to inspire everyone to try actual D&D. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say, "Oh, I decided to try D&D after playing Neverwinter Nights 2," or even DDO (though many DDO players were existing PnP players). Dragonshard, Demon Stone, and Daggerdale are obviously just a joke.

There are some redeeming gems there, like Mask of the Betrayer, but overall it's just... meh.

I do think that D&D is more ready than ever to be implemented in a video game environment with all the changes introduced in 4th and 5th edition (though I'm not a fan of either as far as PnP goes), but I kinda doubt SCL is gonna be the game that gets everything back on track.

With the "John Smith" of video game titles, i'm not expecting a creative masterpiece along the lines of the Bhaalspawn saga, which is sad because, as Keneth rightly points out, it has been a long time since a truly high quality DnD game was released.

Will I still buy it provided it is not a total disaster? Yes, if only to convince companies DnD games sell so they will make more. Plus, it will be an easy way to grasp the basic mechanics of 5th edition.

NWN1 got me into tabletop DnD actually, and the OC at that! Granted, I was like 12 so my taste in games wasn't as refined as it is now. I actually recall playing PS:T for about an hour during that time before turning it off in disgust, only to discover it was one of the best games of all time years later :D

I mean, not for nothing but...Dragonshard. No better reason to be instantly skeptical of all D&D branded titles, especially ones debuting to so little fanfare as this one. So as I said, could be a crap sammich. But a D&D video game is like sex, or pizza. Even when it's bad, it's still pretty good.

A D&D game is nothing like sex or pizza for me. Even when they're good, I'm highly critical of them.

No one's gonna remember the night they had that average-tasting pizza. Everyone remembers that average game with a D&D stamp on it that left nothing but a bad aftertaste in their mouth.

It wasn't really the combat system specifically, more that everything in that trailer reminded me of how DA:O looked when I played it, down to the rings underneath the characters, the camera that doesn't understand the concept of personal space and the GUI.

Well, the director is the same as in DA. I'm assuming that's the creative director (can't be arsed to check), so some similarities could probably be drawn between the two.

Looks more like same engine and possibly a fair amount of same assets rather than just creative similarities, but hey, we'll see.

Looks very much like DA:O to me as well.
