I know this is slightly off-topic, but could you share some ideas on those wolves and similar encounters? It pisses me off supremely when some whacked dog avoids 99% hit attempts by a 6 level paladin.

Chev, do you have high strength? 18/00 would really help. What about weapon proficiencies? I guess you have ++ in your primary weapons.

Just cleared orc cave with my fighter. Ogres weren't tough at all, because I used only bow against them and ogres are quite slow. Sheesh... I'm on day 146 (game time). Resting takes looooong time.

And now, I'm going in Kuldahar vale...

That will do even against ogres, but not against wolves :( They're too fast to play hit and run on them :(

I realized finally that soloing HoF isn't fun. It's too challenging, boring and self-repeating (e.g. clearing orc cave took about four hours) I didn't have any chance against goblins of the vale, there were just too many of them. I had to run to Kuldahar. I fear that the whole game will be just fleeing from monsters. My fighter ended up to be level 8, with thac0 4, 103 hit points and ac 0.

Maybe I'll try that two character party some day.

Soloing HOF is crap, in a party it is possible, but really hard. I prefer to use "Hard" level difficulty for the double xp. The game is harder but not as annoyingly boringly hard like HOF. I did HOF up to the Trials and then stopped in frustration there (perhaps I waited too long to get frustrated?)

I'll have to agree with Harkle and Khazraj on this one. I thought it was a cool idea at first, but it's just too damn hard! My eleven fighter has 18/00,19,17,8,3,14 made it to level 6 and I'm not running in and out of that orc cave! I guess I'll try a six member party, any volunteers?

My stats are 16/15/14/16/17/18, LG human paladin.

    Level 6, 60 HP, thac0 15, AC 2 or 0 with protection from evil.

With level 7 comes + 1/2 attack, but I doubt that would help.

Perhaps I'll have another team game in normal or hard mode and I'll solo HoF with the same character, but level 13.

At this present point, I realise it's possible to do the wolves. It would only involve running back and forth between Kuldahar and cave entrance. Much the same about the cave, only there are no wolves there. The swarms of orcs should also be do-able with some effort and lots of reloading. What next? I'm surely as hell not going to reload every single battle gazillion times or hit and run till the very end of the game.

Partying and soloing with Insane difficulty is both fun and challenging, because of double experience points. But HoF is too much - and after all - it is meant for characters who are over level 10 and have good stuff and lots of spells.

Edit: here's screenshot of that lovely goblin horde: http://www.geocities.com/the_longsaddle/iwdscreens.html

It seems I'll just wait until my character is of decent level.
