The Silver Sword is one of the best options for any warrior who specializes in two-handed swords.
Would you prefer a vanilla +4 Two-handed Sword over it when you find yourself surrounded by high-level warriors or Fire-Giants?
And you can count with your fingers on both hands the number of things immune to +3 or lower weapons.
Sure, there are many other +4 Two-handed swords worth using around... In mid-ToB.

And isn't the Silver sword the works of the Githzerai, and not by the Githyanki?

And isn't it strange, rp-wise, for the PC and the NPCs, if they are good-aligned to kill these Githzerai since these guys are technically the good side of the Giths?

Silver Swords belong to the Githyanki who are usually of Chaotic Evil alignment.

The Githzerai are not good aligned as well. They're neutral, but extremely hostile towards anyone outside their race.

Dakkon from PS:T is simply an extremely genial example of a Githzerai.

@Shura: you really sure about that?
I mean I've read that these swords are given to outstanding zerth warriors and possesss very powerful psionic links to their owners. If one is lost, the githzerai would do all it can to reclaim it back of fear it will be used for the purpose of evil.

The Githzerai are technically good people, compared to the conquering nature of the githyanki, right?
And they do not turn hostile on people outside their race.
Infact, I believe it to be that they want to protect the planes from the domination of the Githyanki. Well, IMHO anyway...

Whatever, back to the discussion people...

Got the Manual of the Planes right here, and it says that the Githyanki are Always Evil (any) and that the Githzerai have Any Neutral, so that IMHO sums up the discussion.

Now, I must say that the Silver Sword with a greater Whirlwind Attack DO kill Melissan, that's how I killed 4 of 4 times.

Regarding the Silver Swords: They belong to the Githyanki, not the Githzerai.

They are minor artifacts created by the Lich Queen that rules the Githyanki people for her elite knights.

The Githzerai equivalent would be Dakkon's Zerth blade, but it pales in comparison in BG2. Not so in PS:T, however.

Well when you talk to Souaz or whatever his name is he explains that the sword is a Holy Relic of his people. And isn't Souaz a Githyanki?
