School sued for privacy invasion

    This is illegal:

    Not because what she did was right, but because she had a right to privacy and is also a minor who is effectively unable to relinquish her right to privacy. If the school officials insisted on gaining access to her Facebook account, they either needed to get her legal guardian to provide written consent, or go through legal channels to get Facebook to provide access.

    Obviously, it is possible for internet service providers and online service providers to provide such information. With the right warrants or legal orders, it is a vital part of good law enforcement.

    In this case, unless she made threats of violence-possible if she engaged in libel or slander, but that is a definite gray area-they had no legitimate reason to ask for access to her private online account.
