Are save games compatable between the 3 cd version with TOTSC and the 5 disk original with TOTSC.

Reason i ask is i just bought my mates PC off him and he had the 3 CD version already installed, so i was using that as i hadnt played for a BG in an age, anyway finally get to friendly arm inn and it asks me to enter disk 2, i do so then of course i realise this is the 3cd version not the 5 cd version and i dont have the 3cd version.

I cant see why not as long as it is patched to the same version as the 3cd one right?

Cheers for any and all replies!

Seems like it's best to do a complete install from the disks you are actually using before playing.
You only need the TotSC disk then and never have to "switch".

You might want to give a link to the instructions for a complete install. If his 5CD version is like mine, there is no such option.

IIRC, you need to manually copy the contents of the 5 CDs data folders to the data folder in your Baldur's Gate folder.

I initially played the 5-CD version and while there was no option labelled as "complete install" you could check which areas to install to HD and which ones not to. Checking everything was practically a full install and I could then play the game with any of the CDs in the drive (this was before I installed TotSC)

Yep, there's an option called custom install where if you check all the boxes it will do a full installation.

In broad terms, anything that alters dialog.tlk or such mission-critical files in your BG installation is bound to create incompatible save game files.

Do a byte-by-byte comparison between the 3cd and 5cd installs to check if compatibility between those two is at least theoretically possible.
