I've found that making a new member to replace a dead one is not expensive. It even increases the hit points. So why resurrecting?

If you are still outside of Easthaven and battling goblins, I guess it may be OK. I was playing on insane and had five of my people got butchered by the goblinoids. It would be easier to create new characters but I loved my party and wanted them back. I think about my characters as people with history, they each have pages long of biographys usually, they are not just 'blank character with 18s in their class ability scores' and all.

And really, when you are in the middle or near the end of the game, losing a high lvl character and then replacing him with a lvl 1 rookie will do you no good, trust me, a lvl 1 rookie can no way survive with a high lvl party unless you do very annoying micromanagements. Even then, the rookie will be very useless for a long time, and can never be as powerful as your old character.

Raising Dead is VERY easy in IWD. Temples to cast Raise Dead and/or Ressurection are easy to find and are always available. The charge is generally affordable, (it gets more expensive when you are higher lvl, but hey, you have more treasure by that time to compensate!) unless it is an elven character. (you need higher spell Ressurection for them)

So, unless the character is Disintegrated (Orrick, Beholders, and all) or killed by Finger of Death (Orrick, the Idol, Beholder death rays, etc.) or fell victim to the scary HoW priest spell Destruction (Can't remember an enemy casting this spell, so you will be safe UNLESS you cast this spell at your own guy, which would be pretty stupid anyway.) raise your dead characters! In these cases, use power word:reload instead. ;)

Replacing a dead party member with a new one usually doesn't increase hitpoints. This can only happen if the new party member has a better con or a class which gets more HP than the old one.
Reading the stat tables (and the rest of the manual) before creating a party is quite useful.

If this is your first IWD game I recommend reloading when a party member dies and you can't raise him without spending money.
Once your cleric reaches level 9 you can use the "raise dead" spell on non-elves.
