Yes, it was me, I spread some reputations for fun a few days ago. I said: "if it's a game, let's play a game, like children". So I gave positive reputation (or grey, whatever, it didn't actually matter) to those who seemed to behave fairly in their posts, and negative/grey to those who also gave me some gifts (read below).

Why did I do it? Well, after getting 4-5 insulting/swearing/obscene messages such as "you douchebag" (douchebag definition) along with the negative reputation points, I decided that if the message senders like to play kindergarten, let's do it (even if just for a few minutes). Douchebag is my favourite, but it wasn't the only one, many others appear as **** on my page due to BoM's excellent bad word filter. So I went and returned the favour to others, but since I consider myself a gentleman, I didn't leave any message (as opposed to my kind visitors who left the forum-converted asterisks **** and the "douche bag" there). I don't need to mention that the person who sent me the highest number of such "gifts" is present in this topic (and he also didn't want to name the person he was talking about in his post).

Note: I have no objections to the reputation system (it's fine on BoM), so when I mention kindergarten, I'm referring to the way it was used (i.e. used in conjuction with curses and other good wishes on my SPS usercp page). I disagree with it.

Let's play rep fight! New game: repfight! Not reptile fight, something better: reputation fight! Who can collect more high-rep friends, who will win the war? C'mon, we're adults. And adults can play better games :D

    [IMG]

(I'm just sleepy a bit, hence the emoticon above. And just wanted to try it out, this has been the first time I used it. If I remember correctly, my posts inspired its creation.)

    Priceless!

Try to look at it as a Christmas present.

It makes sense when you give only a few, to those who really matter to you.

Same with BoM rep. You don't give x-mas presents to the whole city, do you?

Since you feel compelled to hash this out publicly: yes, out of irritation at the unbelievably rude way you responded to five (five!) other posters who tried in vain to engage you reasonably and in no way deserved the disrespect you showed them, I gave you two "gifts." Yes, you deserved them. Yes, I left my name so you would know who and why you were dinged. Yes, in my 7 years on this board I've never seen a poster insult, patronize and irritate so many people in such a manner as you did. I even tried giving you the benefit of doubt and reasoning with you, despite your accusations as to which "side" I was on (I hadnt even participated in your topics up to that point). So I left you a private comment. And when you became even more abrasive, a second. And I was detailed as to why. Since your behavior has only managed to worsen, obviously they didn't have the desired effect. If you want to focus on the fact that I called you a douchebag (which, by the way, is a much milder insult than the definition you cited would have you believe) and ignore everything else I said to you (which was by far the more important part), I guess that's your choice. And if you want it publicly known that, yes, someone here thinks you're an epic douche, I guess that's your choice as well.

But I left your name out before for a reason. If you insist on hashing this out, I'll oblige. But please, stop making such an ass of yourself, keep private comments private, and send me a PM.

[IMG] This thread is for discussion of the reputation system, not various personal resentments due to its use. If you don't like it, turn it off. Simple enough. And if you want to discuss anybody's use of it, do it privately. Thanks.

Just a last short sentence, since Death Rabbit above wrote to me directly and not in a PM: DR, you should send me a PM; you were the one who brought it up here in your first post, as you intentionally made it obvious with the description who you were talking about (see the quote below; and this is indeed not private):

Generally, about the reputation system: in my opinion, it's a good system and makes BoM more colourful, just it should be used "properly". Like in the Christmas present example. :)

So it brings some colour, it's a colourful detail. (In American English, the word is 'colorful', isn't it?) And every little detail matters even in a great site such as this, these minor details are what make the place even more special.

Is there a way to turn it completely off? The last time I checked you could only hide your reputation level.

No, you can't make yourself immune to it, but you can disable all public display of it.
