    I'd say they did - or largely so - for a while. Eventually it became too much BS for them to swallow, but even then they didn't know the full dimensions of the situation. Just because you know the media are lying to you doesn't mean you know what the truth is.

    Heck, my father - who was fairly well educated, if not particularly politically and socially conscious - didn't know the USSR had an external debt until it was announed around 1985. So much information was simply, well, not given, and much of it was slanted.

    That probably played a part as well, but I still think that it was less pronounced than in, say, Germany to begin with.
