Family is boring But still it was quit a nice day, tobad I had no time to make posts :S. Well have a lot of reading to do.

I've had a field day in a Catholic forum today. Our AoDA is a sandbox compared to the morality debates over there. I feel so tired of smiting...

Some do eject their toys from the pram on occasion, don't they? As always, the key is to challenge people's strongly held personal beliefs without actually getting personal...

On a side note, why the hell can I never focus on work until the day before it's either due to be handed in, or I have an exam in it? Is there something wrong with my brain?

 

Bloody stupid Teamsters! It looks like the train conductors who are part of the Teamsters union are going to strike tomorrow so my commuter train will be cancelled.

God, I don't know why our society panders to these lazy union slugs. They should be happy that they have jobs to start with, its not as if you couldn't replace the drivers with computers and have them drive the trains just as well. Heck, the computers would probably pay for themselves within a year or two.

If the union does strike, they had bloody well be planning to refund me a portion of the cost of my monthly pass.

If union workers would just say "We're just happy to have a job at all, so do what you want", we would be working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week like back in the 19th century. It's not that the employers are greedy, but they follow the law of the market that says that if anything can be abused, so will be done. You should be glad that the union is ready to do whatever is necessary to prevent employers from ripping every benefit they can.

 

The response was.... moderately all right.

And damn, I managed to sleep for once - but my ddreams were weird.

Namely, my mother telling me to answer spam of the "My late husband, the director of the bank of Nigeria..."kind... along the lines of "You can't be sure that it is not real just ebcause other people say so"

@Wirhe - In this case the employees in question are already overpaid and are for the most part not necessary. If it wasn't for their strong union these jobs would have been automated years ago. The local subways are pretty much the same.

Our unions invariably either (a) encourage as much worker inefficiency as possible in order to ensure that the maximum number of workers possible perform the job at the highest possible wage or (b) do absolutely nothing to help the workers and skim off as much money in dues as possible.

All of the unions I have had the misfortune of dealing with during my career as a chartered accountant have fallen into category b - which I suppose has been better for my clients but it has always annoyed me to see workers earning less than they would at my non-unionized clients and then having the union that does nothing for them come in and charge them dues.

The exceptions to this rule tends to be the employees of the auto manufacturers, the civil servants, and the transit unions - all of whom somehow manage to be vastly overpaid and absurdely protected against being fired for such small reasons as gross incompetence.

Non-union employees here tend to earn a fair and reasonable wage and have the same hours as unionized employees.

 

The new boss has just phoned. Well, not exactly the boss, given the nature of the contract, but... Anyway, my first class starts tomorrow. Level Elementary Plus. I must say I feel more comfortable with Upper Intermediate and higher... just not high enough for them to notice if I screw something up, so maybe spare me the Proficiency students. Oh well, I will manage. Hehe. As always.
