Do you think the endeavour shuttle will ever launch? It's been cancelled what ? Four times by now ?

edit: apparently I can't spell anymore....

 

I'm usually grumpy when lunch is cancelled once....

Edit: Ofelix correction changed "lunch" to "launch". I liked lunch better....

 

I wonder if the crew get settlement pay from NASA for the stress of having to constantly prepare for each "launch" that never happens?

 

Got a new 2nd job, taking pics and measurments of homes for State Farm. Can do it at my leisure. 1st job i got to, I get Poison Ivy all over me. Arrrgghh! Man this stuff sucks monkey-butt! Hopefully the Doc can give me something to make it go away real quick-like. Otherwise my wife is going to kill me, I'm such a baby when i'm not feeling right.

 

Poison Ivy sucks man! When I get it, it is brutal, so I feel for you. Go to CVS and get something called Calaydryl Clear (it is calamine lotion). It works well to stop the itching and reduce spreading, but there is not much that makes it go away.

 

The Calamine lotions never do anything for me. Cortaid helps some, as it's an Exfoliate as well. I called in to my Doc and his office is sending over a prescription to the pharmacy for me, Pretizone, a steroid that will clear it up asap. Hopefully it will kill the itch right away. God knows i need it...

 

The active ingredient in poison ivy is urushiol. It takes only a small amount of urushiol to cause an allergic reaction. The amount you usually get from poison ivy is many times the amount necessary to cause the reaction -- scratching, or rubbing the affected spot liberates some of this excess and redistributes it to the next part of your body you touch.

Wash you hands often. Especially before going to the bathroom. Trust me on this.

 

Scratching can only spread it if you have not washed it thoroughly from the get go. And cleaned off all of your clothes, shoes and whatever else you were wearing when you came into contact with it. It is a common misconception that by scrathcing the bubbles, the puss that runs out will spread it. That puss is not the cause, it's just your bodies allergic reaction. The oil itself originally gets into your bloodstream and then you get the reaction.

 

Then why don't people get it all over their body when the leaf only touches one part of their body?

 

You will more often than not get it in your extremities 1st, as the body has a harder time fighting it off there. If you noticed when you had it, it was usually on your hands, arms and feet 1st. Also the face for some reason is another spot. At least, that is what every doctor i have had related to me. They all agreed. I have a small child and I'm not worried about giving it to her, as i have already cleaned up my body several days ago. She has not gotten it, nor has my wife. It is a good idea to take Zinc, Vitamins that help your immune system and to use Aloe to help the healing process along.

What ever you do, *never* throw poison ivy in a campfire. While I wasn't around the fire when it happened, those who were, weren't enjoying life....

 

I take it that the smoke spreads the stuff then?

 

The toxin can be passed via the air. That would be a sweet revenge on someone though....

 

The rash is from direct contact only -- I investigated using it as a deterrent in military applications. Urushiol reacts directly with the skin and actually bonds to it (changing it's structure and causing the body to reject that portion of the skin). Urushiol does not normally enter the blood stream but can be delivered via urushiol ladened smoke which causes the same reaction in the throat and eyes -- once again, the chemical bonds to tissue and so does not often enter the blood stream.

 

They're going to make the 6th try today. When trying to launch anything out of Florida in the summer, lightning is a problem.
Thing is, they really need to launch today, or bump it back to July 26th. There's a Russian supply run scheduled to go up too, so we've got to schedule around their trip.

Woke up with a nasty headache today, and I have an eight hour workday to look forward to. Not fun.

 

Man, getting poison ivy in your lungs would be terrible.

I hear ya Saber. I tend to get it every summer, even though my yard is pretty much immaculate. If i'm within a hundred miles of the stuff, somehow I attract it. I'm a poison ivy magnet.

 

Well, I really am looking towards it. I love space exploration in general and also there's Julie Payette a French-Canadian astronaut working for the CSA and the NASA.
