[IMG] My new snake (Rufus) was described in the shop as "a bit lairy" He wasn't a bother towards my partner or I when we handled him in said shop. Sure he could do with some handling to calm him down, but we didn't really see why none of the senior staff would go near the vivarium and why the new guy seemed so terrified of this tiny little animal.

He's been home two days now.

I wouldn't say he was lairy, I'd say he was a bit of an ass-hole!

Tomorrow Kev gets the joy of feeding him :D Good luck, darling!

Uh, all the province's universities might go on an unlimited strike to protest the scheduled tuition fee raise by the government. I'm anxiously waiting for the results. I'm not for a raise in tuition fee, but is a strike really the way to go ? Does disrupting class worth it ? I really doubt the government will cede to their demand, they're [the provincial government] out of touch right wing reactionary anti commonsense mother#*&$... The worst part is this; each Universities' different student's association had to vote on the strike. Mine represents 20 000 students, but less than a thousand showed up for the vote. So the General Assembly ended with a glorious result of 786 for the strike, 122 against and 22 abstinences. Which means than less than 5% decided for all of us. I know for a fact that most of my classmate were against it, but they were too jaded to even show up and vote no  !

I'm pretty sure that same BS is happening all over the province. The "majority" who decided for the strike were lil' Che-Gereva-to-be who all protested on how capitalism was bad, unfair and, other far-left none sense, the irony (hypocrisy?) is they all had designer clothes, high tech laptop and cell phones.

Now I myself lean more towards to left than the right, say centre-left, but I don't think capitalism is inherently bad. It's dumb greedy economist who screwed western capitalism. The system can work and be fairer with a little help from sensitive government who levels the play field. Doesn't these people know communism utterly failed ? Hasn't the past 70 years been proof enough ?!

    Needless to say, I'm pissed.

Why must one who rejects capitalism be in favor of communism? Democratic market socialism has never been tried and I believe holds more validity than capitalism. You're right to say sensible government interference makes capitalism workable, but let's not forget that the capitalists themselves will always have an obvious motive to dismantle government regulations that may be socially beneficial, but not beneficial to their private avarice. Also, the rules of capitalism seem to be utterly worthless when it comes to environmental sustainability. Mandated by law, corporations must pursue as much profit as possible. If this means mountaintop removal, so be it. If this means never stopping carbon emissions and keeping at bay viable alternatives, so be it. If this means fracking and all the consequences that entails to to the citizens, so be it.

Thanks for that Dice, needed it :p

I agree with you, damedog. However the pro strike's rhetoric was more or less plain ol' communism with a coating of anarchy and some self congratulatory unionism* on top. All of which made for a pretty mediocre cake. [ That's why I said stuff about the commie's failure before, sorry if I wasn't clear. ]

And apparently an even more mediocre analogy, what's wrong with me ? Cake ? I'm not even that hungry. What happened to witty Flix ? Where he is ? I liked witty Flix.

    * Not that I'm against the principle of Union, but rather I'm against the bureaucratic nightmare that it became today, at least that's what it looks like here.

ps: Unwitty Flix needs sleep. Night' all.

Hey nerds! How we all doing?

Let's see, what's happened since the last time I was here?

Well, I finished my History honours thesis, which utterly consumed the last four months or so of 2011. It was a great experience, though, hammering that thing out with friends in our little history office. Title: "What can and cannot be revealed by Western sources on Japan in the 16th - 17th century?". Clocked in at 10,000 words. According to rumours, it's been very well received and will perhaps receive an A+, which will bump my GPA up to 8.something (A average), and also mean that I've had a perfect spread in all my History essays in Honours year. Which is pretty brilliant.

Also, in January, I got another baby (half)-brother - little Erik is now three weeks old and smiles alot whenever he's not sleeping or crying.

I've been spending a lot of the interim reading (philosophy), writing (entering competitions), and researching (more writing). Entered two writing competitions; one more is due the end of this week; there is another essay entry that means I may get published on TUFTS Historical Review.

Yesterday I went for a job interview and today I went to work - a university job, helping disabled students transcribe notes and whatnot. So far so good, but my wrist hurts a bit - any suggestion or advice? (typed 12000 words today, ouch)

Annnnd see you all the next time I check in. Bye!

On week 6 without a kitchen, due to a remodel that some water damage sort of forced me into. 6 weeks without a kitchen + 3 young children = no fun at all!

Nearly done though, and should have my fridge and stove back in on Sunday, which are the two final amenities that we are still missing. Then we can finally begin to enjoy our new kitchen... and get back to some normalcy.

Did you discover anything interesting Damedog? I was considering reading some of the older RBP's that I missed over the years. Unfortunately I don't have time for that right now.

Other than random factoids about various board members, nothing too interesting. Which I guess means I really wasted my time :shake:
