    The New year starts and my comapany cuts more budget and increases our workloads. Lovely. Good thing we put hte request in for more help, producing several reports showing how more help in our ofice could be major money savings and give us better standing with the US Government as an importer. Maangement basically told us to shut up and get back to work. Methinks me resume will be out soon.....

    They get headaches from trying to understand fun concepts like Simple Present tense, Simple Past tense, the dreaded two-headed Simple Future tense, and the extremely complicated Present Progressive tense. God help them once I introduce the Present Perfect tense and the nigh incomprehensible Past Perfect tense.

    Plus vocab, work etiquette, idiomatic expressions, basic pragmatics and poilte use of the aforementioned tenses, negative, interrogative, and imperative sentence constructions, modals, and of course pronunciation!

    Sadly, I have been teaching a lower level for the past 2 sessions -- I loved blowing their little minds with the Passive Voice!

    The government pays me to give them headaches and get them in return, but they sure as hell don't pay me enough . . . .

    I've learned crap I never thought of before. No native speaker carries this feces around in his head on a day to day basis, but if you are learning it for the first time you've gotta boil it down and makes lists. Which verbs are followed by a gerund (if followed by a nominal)? Which verbs are followed by and infinitive (if followed by a nominal)? I sure as hell couldn't make up a definitive list. Thank heavens the textbook lays them all out. I mean, we all know it reflexively, but try breaking it down and getting an immigrant with a 3rd grade education in his OWN language to get it so he doesn't say things like "I will consider to buy a new dictionary" or "I intend buying a new dictionary" -- which I of course understand but some of their errors render them nearly freaking incomprehensible and as such unemployable -- it's an adventure!

    Everyone's talking about the headaches you give the immigrants. It sounds like, at least at first, you were talking about the headaches the immigrants are giving you. I suppose it works both ways though.
