It was a small local store. The one before that replaced a good PSU whit a weak one that gave reboots.

Going to replace my motherboard now, seems like the problem was some compatability problem between the motherboard and the GPU so I am getting another one. Let's hope I will actually get a usable computer now.

Heh...that’s not a very good idea here in Utah. There was a local chain of computer stores (8 stores in all), that was owned by some crazy coot. One day he snapped, and fired all his employees and sold all his stores. Another local chain (about the same size) agreed to assume the warranties...but only for a year...after that, you've got nothing.

There's just too much of a risk that the small guys will go belly up and leave you high and dry...this situation proves that even the local chains are vulnerable. :bad: :rolling:

Well of course, all over the world YMMV. There's no such thing as always perfect.

    Update #13:
I managed to install a dual boot system for Vista and XP and I now try to install Mass Effect on XP. Let's then see how that works ...

... it works and works and works.

Long version: I played Mass Effect for about ten hours total yesterday (one of those days ... ;) ) and I had one single crash. That I can accept. Game didn't look any different than under Vista. I could shop, read the journal and was able to keep track of my quests and so forth. That's the way a game is supposed to work. I also installed KotoR 2, another game that Vista 64 refused to run - worked like charm (in fact, it loads in about 20 or so seconds :D) I expect the same for NWN 2 and KotoR (can't wait to see how many fps I'll get there), and in the near future future for Fallout 3 as well.

So the cause of my troubles was either DX10 and/or Vista 64bit.

    Or both.... :bad:

So now that you have a dual-boot setup, what OS loads by default if you don't make a selection within 20 seconds or so....or does the boot process pause indefinitely until you make a selection? :hmm: :rolling:

I use Vista as my Standard OS, somewhat paradoxically as it might seem, but for the practical reason that it on itself supports more hardware than XP. I like Aero, too. Also, there is a stubbornness aspect to it: I bought it, so I might as well use it. I set it to start if there are no choices made within 45sec. I used VistaBootPRO 3.3 and it's very easy to use.

I don't have a floppy drive in my new computer, and while I was able to install XP on the RAID, it took some fiddling to get there and Vista is somewhat more user friendly in that regard. For movies, internet and normal applications Vista 64 is sweet so far. Apparently it 'only' (and truly so) sucks at gaming and 32bit applications in general. So my Logitech G15 LCD manager is somewhat prone to crash under Vista 64bit - rock stable under XP.

    Update #14:
    My views on Vista 64bit:

If you want to play and want to enjoy DX10, buy Vista 32bit. Avoid 64bit. At least for as long as games are written in 32bit code. Or buy Vista's ultimate edition to be able to choose between 32bit and 64bit versions. 64bit is not well established and supported yet. Can't say anything for Vista 32bit - but as long as it is about DX9 games - ol' XP is superior for gaming when compared with Vista 64bit (and probably Vista 32bit as well). I see no need for Vista in that regard. XP will also put less of a strain on older systems. Iiirc my Vista installation of three weeks takes up about 23 GB in size, XP about 9 GB. Even though it recognises less of my 4GB RAM, XP is perceivably more agile (my comp has a Vista score of 5.9 - this isn't a complaint about lag). XP is simply far more frugal in it's performance and resource consumption than Vista.

That said, when running 64bit applications Vista 64 is really nice. As always, it is about what you use Vista 64bit for. IE 64bit is pretty fast. I use 7zip in the 64bit version, and it is really fast too. It's just there aren't that many genuine 64bit applications for what I do around yet.

    I did a few tests yesterday evening - I run NWN2 at maxed settings at ~ 60fps :)

    Congrats! :)

Recalling my relief when my comp eventually started to perform as it should, I feel with you.
