And they did so precisely because they thought they needed the religious right to attain and maintain power.

Given the performance of the Democratic Congress which she leads, I don't believe she would make a good president. This Congress was elected basically as a protest against the Bush administration's policies. And what have they done? Voted funding for the "surge". Voted authorization for warrentless wiretaps. They might as well be Republicans. Their public approval rating is a record low of 14%. The House she leads has done nothing. She leads a sham opposition, a miserable farce.

Yes, it is true that they have voted poorly on those issues you cite. But they have voted to raise the minimum wage and for the child healthcare bill. Those are two issues which GWB could not care less about and they would have never made it past a Republican congress. So, it has not been all bad.

I suspect the Democrats are letting Bush continue his - unpopular - foreign policy with only token resistance. The more he is allowed to mess up, the less problems will the Dems have taking the White House, along with both the House and the Senate, in November '08.

I'll not defend them for authorizing the wiretaps (I haven't heard about this, though....could someone post a link to an article about it for me?), but supporting the "surge" is another issue entirely. The dems were presented with a choice of either a) not funding the troops in Iraq; leaving them ill equipped with insufficient backup (and being crucified in the media for sabotaging the troops) or b) funding them since they lacked the numbers necessary to override a presidential veto.

You see, the Dems are weak right now since they only barely have a majority. This means that they really can't pass any bills that King George doesn't like because he can and will veto them, leaving the tiny Democratic majority little real recourse. To make matters worse, if a few Dems break with the party on a bill (Joe Lieberman, I'm looking at you), the Republicans can still get their way.
