Actually, khaavern, the EU has over 460 million people, while the US has just over 295 million. Yet the US still has a larger economy (by purchasing power parity).

 

That's factually not true. I am not sure, but I think you mean per capita income of the EU25 (including new members) compared to the US in ppp. In this case 1/2 would be about right.

The gdp (PPP) of the EU25 is the same as the gdp (ppp) of the USA. 10 trillion or so.

Western Europe is the biggest market of the world.

But it's about oil. And I want to live in the country with the best puplic transport system humanly possible. One that's even better than a Japanese one.

So, would you actually argue that Luxembourg achieves its high standard of living purely through its enlightened social democratic policies, and in fact, that policies alone explain why the Luxembourgiouse are so much better off than even the Norwegians? Those must be good policies indeed. "Mir wëlle bleive wat mir sin!" indeed...

Of course, it has nothing to do with the banking industry siphoning money off Germany, or with Luxembourg's privileged position in the administration of the EU, or with the fact that only a little over a half of its population has citizenship, and thus full access to benefits from the state...

This is not to say that I don't think that the US could benefit from more social policies... Healthcare and a decent train system come to mind...

In some way. Idling thoughts and time away. At least should they be your own thoughts. Time doesn't belong to anyone anyway. But the thoughts you get ascribed to be better your own, not somebody else^s.

 

No more mentions about conserving energy from Bush these past days. I guess those were just some comments made so he cannot be accused he does not care about this issue at all. (On the other hand, I am almost afraid to think he might take such stuff seriously, who knows what he might come up with - faith based initiatives ? ).
