Since I was looking to upgrade my video card, I learn that I also needed to upgrade my PSU. However, I have a Dell; which makes it very difficult to have just any PSU.

As you can see, the case does not give any space for the switch found on must PSU. :flaming:

After a frustrating couple of hours in the phone with them (Dell), I actually found a PSU that is compatible with my PC and allows me to get the video card I want. The problem now, is that I can not find it available anywhere. :bang:

If someone knows where I can buy one, I'll greatly appreciated

The PSU in question is this one: PPCS500D 500 Watt Dell Power Supply

And as you can see Newegg does not have it!

    Please :help:!

I looked around on Newegg and Amazon, but couldn't find anything worth getting in the 500W range. Can't you order it from Dell directly?

The link you gave me also shows them out of stock.

The one that Dell has out-of-stock is $100!!! I hate the fact I can't get the one I originally wanted, which was only $50; although this one it looks to be better (SLI Certified, 80 Plus Certified, MTBF>100,000 Hours)

I will try to contact OCZ tomorrow and see what they say, but I'm not expecting a good price from them either!

You could always cut a hole in the case for the switch.... :hmm:

See...this is why I hate Dell desktops.

I thought about that too, but I honestly wouldn't even know how. In addition, I'm afraid of doing more damage than good that way. :o

I agree about Dell, although I did not feel like that until now!

So how about getting a different case?

 I don't think that will help either, AFAIK Dell's Motherboard is properitary too, which means that I would need either a new mobo or a very special case.

Either way, if I was to go that far, I could just make my own new computer from the ground up; however, I don't want to do that. The computer I have is good and only needs a few upgrades. I don't have the money or even time to make a whole new one.

I have never worked with a Dell machine and I never knew that Dell went to such bizarre lengths to prevent people from swapping cases/motherboards. :toofar: If I were you, I would also make sure that the PSU that you want to buy also has the correct motherboard connector, it might otherwise not even fit on the motherboard.

Not necessarily, swapping cases is not that a big deal. You unscrew the board from its case, after removing all the other cards, and screw it back into the other machine. I find it to be a lot easier than swapping processors :hahaerr: I'm very good at messing up those.

Maurolava can you find out wich motherboard you have. (CPU-Z)

If it is a standard sized one with the srewholes in the right places you can place it in an other zase. You most likely be right that the board is special shaped but a lot of case have many options.

It will cost money, but you can get a cheaper PSU unit to compensate possibly evening it out.

Well, the PCU that I'm asking for at the begining of the thread is made specifically for my dell, so it will defenetly be compatible with my mobo.

AFAIK, it is a standard size, but the screwholes are modified.

As I mentioned before, I don't really want to have to buy more items for what I thought it was gonna be an easy upgrade. I originally wanted to just to upgrade my video card; however, I now have to upgrade my PCU...

Regardless, I still looking forward to get this change done, and give a second life to me computer! :D

I have been thinking along two lines. First, there some cases out there that use several formfactors(srewholesize). I read that some dell's use BTX instead of ATX. There are BTX cases for sale.

If you have decided to go for the dell PSU, by all means do so. I do not tell you what to do, just bring alternatives.

The second line is your current Graphics card How much power does it use? A modern equivalent in power usage can be much more powerfull in performance as your current card. Some new ati card do not need extra power limiting them to 75 watts max. http://www.powercolor.com/global/NewsInfo.asp?id=929

You make a good point. But I don't think I would invest in a BTX case, unless it can convert to ATX as well. Some cases have both options and would be more flexible for future upgrades.

I finally was able to contact them, they stated that they discontinued that line, hence the reason why I have such a hard time finding it, only merchants with over-stock of them are selling them, more expensive than normal.

OCZ has some, but they have to dig out of warehouse. They have to call me back to find out if they do have it, only then will I know what they can charge!
