I know English as a foreign language but I want to learn another one. My candidates are French, German and Spanish. I am studying computer science, so which one will be most useful? Explanations of ideas are welcome.

I voted Spanish, but I'd say that's just a question of taste. If your into South America its Spanish you want, if you favor central Europe I'd tell you to learn German whereas French is quite widespread and also a good choice.

I cast my vote for Spanish; I think that is the most widespread language of the three, though French is also commonly spoken outside of Europe. German is mostly spoken in Central Europe but not common outside Europe.

For computer science, you may also want to consider Japanese.

Yes, I think Japanese is the best choice but it is very hard to learn. My lessons are already difficult, so I don't want another difficult one.

I voted german because Germany is a country with big industries and much trade with other regions and contries.

Actually if I had to pick a language to learn I'd pick chinese (mandarin). Mainly because China will become economicly powerful and speaking the native tongue of your buisness associates is always a plus.

I voted german, spanish would also be usefull, but it depends of so much where you live. French is useless, though I study it.

Spanish. I wish I had that choise when I was younger, but I had to choose between german and french, so I chose german, which is a bit easier since I'm from Scandinavia. French could be good to know, but I hear it's really effin hard to learn, but more people speak spanish, and it seems easier to learn than both german and french too.

I voted spanish because it is very wide spread and there are a lot of fun south american countries that speak it.

BTW I learned some german when I was in highschool and it was nice but I much prefer the sound of spanish. (No offence to my german speaking friends out there.)

I voted for German because I want to learn it...and I hate the French.

Spanish might come in hand more often if you live in the US since for every US citizen, there are 3 illegal Mexicans living here... :bang: :flaming:

I'd still go with German. If those damn illegal immigrants can't understand English or German...then that is *their* problem, not mine. :p :rolling:

It doesn't seem to matter as when you've learned one, you can figure out the other two easily enough.

My guess would be that for a computer programmer and generally a computer specialist, French would be the most useful of those, although Spanish may become so within your lifetime. :p At any rate, French is oh so marveilleux and ladies lui aiment tout court. :p Seriously, though, that's the impression I've had over my many years with computers. German, however, will come the easiest to you, as English is your language. Your choice there, I guess. If you learn French, however, Spanish will be easier. Knowing Spanish, it should be a piece of cake to learn Italian.

I thought French will be the best, but people told me to learn German. But, as chevalier said, german will be the easiest, so I can learn it anytime( the people I mentioned above also told it :) ). And Spanish is the most widespread one, but native Spanish speakers are few in the computer industry, AFAIK. And I have 5 days to decide

I chose German because someone told me that it's apparently not that hard, I don't know anything about Spanish, and French was hard when I learnt it at school.

German. I'd say you need it more often, since German has been pretty busy in the (open source) software -front.

Oh, and russia can sound pretty evil too. :D

Spanish and French are pretty similar. If you learn one, you've practically learnt the other one. And they are both more similar to English than German is. So German would probably add the most to your overall knowledge of languages.

I voted for German. Argohir, they were our allies in WW1. :p My aunt lives in Germany, my mother went there a few years ago and she said there was more Turks than Germans there. If you go there probably you won't feel like a stranger i think.
