I must have about 80 fiction or easy reading books.
I have a large number of books I've downloaded which I'm not numbering.
I generally buy books from the second hand book store.

From time to time, I like to partake of the used books from the used bookstores that are around the city, but I primarilly do my shopping at Borders. Online, however, I am a big Amazon.com fan.

Last time I counted my books, seven years or so ago, I had 130 or so. My library has roughly tripled in size since then, and perhaps even quadrupled.

I Get 'em from amazon and bookstores.

Many of my books I purchased in college (I was an English literature major and did a minor in history). But many of the books I buy are still American, Medieval and Renaissance history and literature titles. These I get from B&N, Borders or Amazon. I don't order much from Amazon any longer because I don't like to put books on my credit cards (although I pay a bit more in a brick and mortar store). I am trying to do something which is nearly impossible for an American these days - become "debt free."

1,200 and counting. Thank God I have a LOT of storage space. My room at my parents house has 3 floor to ceiling bookshelves specifically designed for pocket books. I also have 15 3'x3' boxes crammed full of books there. Now if I could just find more room to expand my library :D

    @ Arahar - that's A LOT of books

I buy mine from Chapters, and sometimes other book stores. Though I don't need to buy too many books because I can usually borrow them from my brother's collection. :D

At the normal bookstore or at Amazon. If I buy something used, it is usually from someplace online.

There are no charity bookstores, or second hand bookstores in my town. But sometimes some people sell books at the yearly town celebration. I think they do that for charity too.

I'm at about 1,800 and counting (if you don't count my wife's books - add hers and we're well over 2,500). I try not to buy used books unless they are out of print, as the author doesn't get anything for them the second time around.

I mostly buy books at the book store, as my patience is quite low for waiting for delivery.

Woah! 2,500 books! You must need to have a whole second house in which to store them all! Or you live in a mansion. I struggle to find room in my house for the 100 or so that we have. Not to mention the fact that 2,500 books must have cost over $30,000. Wow.

I dont see where you'd get time to read all of them? I've got around 50, and I dont have time to read most of them.

Good point, Takara. Even at the reasonably rapid rate of one book per week, it would still take 50 years to read 2,500 books!

Sorry guys, but it takes a lot less than that to read them and they cost a lot less than you seem to think. Of the 1,800 or so that I own, no more than 100 are hard-backed, the rest are paperback.

Also, it may shock you to know that when I started collecting books, most paperbacks were $1.50 or less in the fantasy/sci-fi genres.

Admittedly, they've gotten a bit pricier, but still -- the most I've paid for a paperback even today is like $7.99.

As for reading them, I pretty much don't watch TV (and haven't for years) and I'm perfectly happy with 5-6 hours of sleep a night. Back in the day, I would go through 5-8 books a week, easy. Now, with a more than full time job, two kids, etc., I'm down to about one a week.

Wow. I must be some sort of slow reader. I'm lucky if I can read two books a month. You must not have time to play any computer games either then? If you do, then you must live in some sort of world where time runs more slowly then here.

We also have tons of books. I read a lot, and quite fast, if it is an interesting book (also non-fiction).

My father once told somebody that I read a book a day, although that is a bit exaggerated. But it has happened that I finished a thick book in two days, or another book in one day. It all depends on the book.

It seems to run in the family. My mother and one of my sisters read as much as I do (my mother not exactly as much, because she has to work). My sister finished read the entire fifth book "Harry Potter" in one day - the day it was released.

I'm another SFBC geek. Great club. Many of my books are from them.
I also hit Barnes and Noble a lot for the non-SF stuff. You can get most of the classics there (anybody here like Hemingway?).

If you people read so many books, why bother buying them instead of getting them from the library? It's not like you're going to read them all again.

Oh, I do get books from the library. I do that all the time.

You have no idea. A good book can be read an infinite amount of times. I read several series at least double ("Chronicles of Narnia", "Song of the Lioness" quartet", A few of the "Dragonriders of Pern", and I am planning on re-reading the older Discworld novels. I can't remember in which the shopping carts were. I think it was "Reaper Man".)
Also, some books have a certain charm. "MOMO" and "The Neverending Story" by Michael Ende (he also wrote "Jim Button and Lukas the Steam-engine Driver")are some books I read at least twice, and could start right now to re-read.

You always discover something new, or rediscover things you forgot.
