Actually your examples touch the pronunciation of the 'e' vowel. Nothing to do with 'z'. Besides, what's that 'd' doing in the pronunciation of the word 'zebra'? Even if you pretend there's a mute consonant there, it's not the real way anyone says the word. Anyway, it's /'zi:bre/, the 'e' being 'schwa' (flipped horizontally in phonetic script). Any other way is non-standard English.

    Nior, I didn't ;)

I was going to go throught the whole alphabet just for a laugh [bored of Basingstoke here], but I couldn't be bothered. Sorry if it sounded patronising, it was only a laugh.

[IMG] Do you pronounce "B" Bed or "C" Ced or "D" Ded or "E" Ed or "G" Ged or "P" Ped or "T" Ted or "V" Ved? Then why "Z" Zed? ;)

    Zed.

    Everyone knows it.

I don't care who's letter it is, British or American - I grew up saying "zed", that's how I pronounce it, and that's way it should be!

    Zed is winning :)

Welcome to the Boards! The one place on the entire web where we discuss all possible questions: From snowglobe, to 'read the @#$%ing frontpage', from 'Afterlife' to 'How to pronounce the letter Z'! Have fun!

    Would it be Zed-Layrex, Zee-Layrex or Zay-Layrax?
(or should this comment be posted in SS :D )

[IMG] It is Zee Layrex - IIRC he said it somewhere

The correct term is Zed, Zee for those with the grammatical sense of a dyslexic pineapple.

    (sp)

    (PS, I was joking)

Us English give you, the rest of the world, the privilage of such an advanced and beautiful language. And you repay us by pronouncing it all wrong.
    tut tut.

    The correct pronounciation is 'zed'

I don't care if a big yellow bird says different.

The first and the last 'e''s in both scripts are 'schwas' (horizontally flipped in phonetic script, pronounced like in 'thourough' :D ).

Americans are always spelling stuff wrong. Take 'colour' spelt as 'color' We invented the language so I think we should get to choose how to pronounce it . ZED
