Actually, I was same as HB, having never thought about eating (or even known you could) eat sunflower seeds - I don't think I've even noticed them in the shops - until I saw them solve a crime with them on CSI...

My hamsters liked them. That's about as far as I've gone, really.

I haven't had sunflower seeds in years. But when I do eat them, it's just the meat inside.

I also thought it was strange the HB never heard of sunflower seeds. Perhaps Rally's reason is why he hasn't - he just hasn't noticed. I would find it strange to say the least if sunflower seeds were unavailable "down under". Still, it's strange that you never heard of them, even if you've never tried them.

Seriously I've eat them for the very first time this year, and I've eaten half the bag before my friend told me I shouldn't eat them. Oh well freakin' seeds.

    They're poisonous to guinea pigs.

When I eat them (rarely) I eat the whole seed :)

Hmmm...if I *did* eat them, I would do what a lot of people do. Suck on the shell until the flavor/salt is gone, and then eat the inside seed thingy, and then spit out the shell. But that's just waaaaay too much work for such a tiny seed...which is why I don't eat seeds. :skeptic: :rolling:

I prefer to buy the packages without shells.

In fact, the only time I prefer nuts with shells is when eating peanuts in a bar.

Thanks, Kilted Crusader. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has never seen sunflower seeds for sale as a food. Since this thread started, I have had a close look in the supermarket and could not see any sunflower seeds for sale to eat. We do have sunflowers here (in a flower shop), but maybe nobody here has ever thought of eating them. You certainly can't buy them in shops in various flavours, like some of you seem to be able to. Maybe some of the people who grow sunflowers eat the seeds, but nobody seems to be selling the seeds as edible anywhere. Maybe this is an untapped business opportunity.

EDIT: Actually, I DID see sunflower seeds for sale at the supermarket, but only as a component of a bird seed mix in the pet food aisle.

    ...

    I suppose you're right.

I've had a rat, which, strangely, disliked them. Even more strange, he was a fan of poppy seed crackers.

Ironically, I'm eating some BBQ sunflower seeds right now.

Being from New Zealand as well as HB and living in the same city I must say I have no idea what most of you are talking about. Pumpkin seeds and so forth, yeah. Sunflower KERNELS, yes. But the seeds? Never heard of em being eaten.

Harbs, have you seen Ace Ventura? If so, you've seen sunflower seeds :D .

I don't have them, as 60% of the damn thing is shell that you can't eat (or, at least wouldn't agree with your digestive system). So small, they're a pain to get in for the sake of a little bit of seed.

    Nice though!

I have found a picture of a sunflower seed on the Internet and can confirm that I have SEEN them before but only as a decoration on the tops of some types of fancy bread (and in the mixed bird seed packet).

Here you are HB. These are the ones we are talking about. At least one of the more popular brands.

@Kuemper - notice that they are called "spitz" indicating that you should probably spit part of them out ;)

Thanks, Dragonfly. I've definitely never seen anything like that here. And here I was thinking that North Americans only ate fatty fried snack foods. Those seeds look almost healthy!

Actually unsalted raw sunflower seeds are very healthy but should be limited because they are also high in fat. Spits, on the other hand, have a lot of salt on the shells so I wouldn't exactly call them healthy but they do taste good.
