'Martial' is present because techniques that aid in self-defense are used almost as a tool in order to help the student develop. Tai Chi is a martial art- how often do you see people using it in a fight?

Obviously some fights will become unavoidable unless you are a complete pacifist, but the majority can be got out of without voilence.

Starting military combat this Sunday. Screw Tai Chi and gentlemen-sports; it's time to kick ass. Or get whooped. :D

You know, Scotland has it's own form of martial arts. It's called "Fuh-KYOO!"

It's mostly just head-butting and then kicking people when they're on the ground, though.

That's awesome DR. Do you know of any schools where I can learn this ancient and sacred art in New Jersey? ;)

DR, Am I right to say that this ancient martial arts usually requires the use of very powerful drink called "Be'er", or some other with similar enchancing effects in human body? :D

I've been told that no one ever wins a fight as much as one really survives it. But if I had to really get into fight -- one that really risks my bodily well-being -- I think I would yell "I have AIDS!" and proceed to bite the closest person.

I don't know about you, but for me trying to beat someone up is nowhere near as important as risking contracting a fatal disease.

And besides, what do I need to learn to fight anyway? Why not just try to get a decent job and to move to a decent neighborhood, or try to get rid of crime and vote for officials "tough on crime"?

    We do?

Oh yes, it's a 'religious' requirement in order to aid our training or some such... :p

    How about this: Kas-pin

I know it isn't much, but it's kind of amusing notion that we finnish would have some sort of traditional martial other than after-a-bar-night-drunken-fighting

Just started this Mui Thai class. It is a martial art workout with little actual instruction. There are no levels or belts. The reason I picked it up is it is offered free by my gym, it is before work at 0630 and due to my schedule, I can not join another Tae Kwon Do or Tang Soo Do class after work.

It helps keep me in shape as well as makes sure I don't get rusty while I wait for my schedule to change.
