I have a completely different experience. I remember that, when I bothered to try to get the max experience (trying to push Jaheira over the 3 million exp hump), I was able to draw until I got the card I needed, save, keep drawing, etc. There was no predetermination after the first draw.

Maybe the difference is between you guys playing on Multiplayer mode or Single player mode. I prefer to play multiplayer because I don't have to start with the principle quests for both SoA and ToB, (Jon's dungeon is crappy, and so is the elven garden).

Thanks Beren. As can be seen on his link, it's a little different than what I initially described, but the point I made about not being able to get the three best draws in the deck is true. For example, Star and Key are only available on the second draw, so you can't get them both. Moreover, you can only get Throne on your third draw, and then only if you had a bad draw along the way.

If you're looking for the best draws, I would recommend the following. Draw Donjon on the first card. The good cards are of the least benefit on the first draw, plus the good cards on your second draw aren't that great either if your first card was good card. So use the first draw to get your bad draw out of the way. It casts imprisonment on the user with a save at -4, but if you have a character with a good saving throw versus spells (and by ToB, you should have someone who should be able to make that save regularly, even if it is at -4), you should be able to avoid the effect.

On the second draw either take Key (+3 ring of protection), Star (+1 to primary stat) or Sun (300,000 xp for party), whichever is your preference. I would probably take the Star here. If you have 6 characters in your party, then Sun only gets you 50,000 xp each. If I'm soloing, I probably already have maxed out my levels. The +3 ring of protection is nice, but chances are most of my characters are already using some type of magic armor, which is better than regular armor plus the ring of protection. If you're soloing, this is almost definitely true, so the +1 to stat is the way to go. (As an aside, it's dumb that the monk gets +1 to wisdom. What does a monk need wisdom for? What a gip!)

On the third draw the only good cards to get along this path are Throne, which gives 1,000,000 XP to the party, and Moon, which gives permanent +10 hp. Throne is nothing to sneeze at, even at this point in the game. That works out to 166,666 xp per character even if you have 6 characters, which is probably more than you get an any other point in the game. Obviously, if you're soloing, you've probably already hit the xp cap, so the 10 hp are the way to go.
