Snook, it sounds to me that your brain is telling your heart there might be something to what I am saying even if I am doing so in a confrontational way. For instance, there are plenty of people who claim being a Christian is American. Are they correct?

My own answer to this question, for whatever country we are talking about and one I have given plenty of people in my personal sphere when they have complained about "foreigners", is that since nations are arbitrarily constructed groups and entities so must the membership be. When the government of such a construction has granted membership (citizenship) to a person then that person is Swedish/American/French and so forth. Any other criteria leads to an impossible discussion even if it rankles that some dude who moved to Sweden, got a Swedish citizenship and then goes to bomb stuff in Afganistan has the same rights as a Swede for ten generations being arrested abroad has.

This discussion reminds me of the old joke where the Scottish senior citizen hears on the radio that an atrocity has been committed. He says "No Scotsman would do such a thing". The next thing out of the mouth of the announcer was that the perpetrator was a Scottish citizen, and the old fellow says "No TRUE Scotsman would do such a thing!" I've re-told the joke poorly but it illustrates my point.

I fall somewhere between Snook and Joacqin. If a newcomer comes to any country he should respect the traditions and try to fit in a bit. That is necessary for them to also respect him. If he shows no respect for the country that has welcomed him, he shouldn't be too surprised if he is not respected in return.

LMAO, Snook, that was great!

More seriously, though, we've promised to develope this technology over the past 8 (and he's probably right that it's probably more) administrations!

And guess what? We have! ... It's just not done yet. :o Oh, and we're still terrified of nuclear power for some reason I still can't fathom.

    NOG,
I can fathom why one would be terrified of nuclear energy in all forms. I was in my company's NBC detection squad and remember exercises with me running around in fog in an NBC protection suit with my breather, listening to my Geiger counter crackling (fortunately simulated). It was like walking on the moon. Probably one of the eeriest experiences in my life.

There's A Diabolical 30-Year Plot To Have Terrorist Babies Born In U.S.!

From talkingpointsmemo: Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) went to the House floor Thursday night, to warn of a diabolical terrorist plot -- with a 20-30 year timeline. The plot involves arranging for a child to be born in the United States -- then training them in an isolated environment abroad, ready to dispatch them back here to commit violence after a quick two or three decades.

Personally, I put this in context with the recent Republican talk about gutting the 14th amendment, and the broader topic of immigration. It's about nativism if you so want, this time with a profoundly paranoid streak. Enjoy:

Wow. Hopefully, the DNC will repeat this little gem ad nauseum in order to get that buffoon out of office. We don't need paranoid schizophrenics in the house.

But, wait a minute. . . . Maybe someone "gamed our system" 25 years ago and the person ready to "destroy our way of life" is just about ready to come in here and get to the destroying part. Hmmmm.

Loco. The 9/11 guys had such a problem getting into our country and staying here that I can totally understand his justifiable paranoia in worrying that the terrorists are grooming ostensible US citizens to do the job instead.

I think the quote goes something like this. "People get the government they deserve".

The part that really concerns me about this is she is either a complete idiot or she is a puppet and just reads/does whatever someone else tells her to say/do. If it is the second isn't it important to find out who this "someone else" is? I'm probably more comfortable if she is an idiot (although it doesn't say much for the people who voted for her).

    Enjoy.

Ummm. North Vietnam? Are we mixing up Korea with Vietnam here?

Also, what good would it have been to declare victory in Vietnam when we did not achieve victory? I'm a little hazy about that, but I have to think that someone would have mentioned that the Emperor was buck naked if we tried that.

She is correct in her major point - that Vietnam was a civil war. This point is often historically overlooked. I think her point is that civil wars are much better left to the nation engaged in it (much like ours). She articulated it poorly, but her point stands fairly well. As far as declaring "victory," it seems to me that we heard that about a certain country in the Middle East -- and we are still there. Maybe we got "the government we deserved" in that instance too. ;)

"Nation building" at its finest -- in 2010.

I hope the new financial reform bill will stop things like this from happening. Although, I kind of doubt it. If this is even close to being true people should be put in jail.

I don't know who these two guys are but they are only giving you a piece of the story. IndyMac was orginally founded by Countrywide Mortgage (do I need to say more?). In 2008 they were sold to IMB HoldCo LLC, a hedge fund company.

    http://www.fdic.gov/news/news/press/2009/pr09001a.html

However, the bad mortgages were sold to OneWest, a bunch of scammers who tried to screw the homeowners:

    Take a look at this:

There is just so much to look at regarding the IndyMac and OneWest situation:

This isn't exactly political and may belong in one of the evolution threads, but I feel this somehow comes close to the truth. It is a little hard to hear.
