Straight fighters don't get any spells; Rangers and Paladins, however, do. Rangers get priest spells starting at level 8, but max out their spell-casting ability at level 16 with 3rd level spells. Paladins get priest spells starting at level 9, and max out at level 20 with 4th level spells.

Personally, I think you should pick the type of character you want to play (sounds like you pretty much have already) and go with it; they all have there advantages and disadvantages. There is no overall 'best' class. Min/maxing your character's stats only helps so much (but that 3 INT and the 6 WIS could put you in a lot of trouble later).

Just so you know, there are quite a few stat-enhancing items around, especially for strength. A couple of them are available early on in the game, not mention a host of potions that will temporarily enhance any stat.

As far as two-handed swords, there are a lot of really good ones in the game. Same with long swords. If you just start playing, you'll come across some very soon. Personally, I like finding stuff and being surprised by it, rather than spending my time searching for a specific item. If you're really keen on searching just for those things, do a search on the board for favourite weapons or best swords.

With my fighters, I always like specialising them as much as possible. Other than switching from range to melee weapons, most of my characters usually stick to one or two weapon types. The weapon styles come in very handy as well with fighters.

Edit: To answer the rest of your question, Wisdom is required for Priest spells, and Intelligence is required for Mage spells. A Paladin or Ranger (only fighter-types with spells) have minimum WIS requirements anyways, but a score of 16 or better will give you additional spells. Good luck and have fun :)

[IMG] I am currently using an Elven Archer- Long bow proficient, and also a few points in bastard sword...

Very nice setup. With the elf you get the extra dex (19) and I also managed to wangle a 17 con and 18/78 str.

Downside: 13 intel 16 wis and 10 chr
I guess the wis isnt bad...

A few of these stats actually came out on the roll. I think all I had to do was take away some intel to get the 19 dex... Cool huh? A 93 roll is admirable compared to some rolls I have had in the past. Only a few clicks of the roll button too!

I am currently mid-chapter 2 (all the quests) and using the Elven Court Bow +3 available from the d'arnise keep in the golem room.

I had a tough time with that Iron golem!

Well, sorry to bother you bragging about my Archer... I have a lot of pride in him...

Hopefully it might lay some insight into archers though...

    Caliban

{EDIT} BTW- I use the Human influence ring I got at the circus on this guy... It is hard to roleplay with such a low stat. Now to deal with the intel... how am I to do that?
    :(

Well, this is a day old from your last post corbulo87, so i hope your game is going well.

I'm from the old paper, pen and funny looking dice AD&D so for an elven fighter,I'd go with longswords (to maximize the +1)and dual wielding and probably a slot for short bow to pick off spell casters at the start of the game. Its matter of taste I guess, 'cause I just don't recall elves waving huge two handed swords(except the half-elven Harper Assassin Arilyn Moonblade in the Harpers' series of books, or was it a bastard sword?).

Elves are great warriors because of technique, not brute strength (that belongs to Dwarves, Half Orcs and exceptional humans) so a high dexterity is desirable (19 max :)).

A high constitution is also important, especially if you have a Rambo-esque fighting inclination.

I'm not sure but it sounds to me that you're trying to cover all the possible bases the game might throw at you. Well, remember you have 5 other buddies to you help out. Its tough trying to lone wolf, especially since its your first time through.

I guess that's it. Good luck and happy gaming. :)

[IMG] If you look @ my profile, youll see that i play games workshop wargames. these are tabletop games that range in topic from fantasy (orcs, goblins, elves, very tolkien-esque) to futuristic battles in the 41st (!) millenium. Corbulon is one of the members in my army (the general, in fact), and hes part of a special unit in the High Elf army called 'swordmasters'. they carry huge double handed swords, but they are so skilled that they may use them like normal swords with all the bonuses of double handed ones. i have tried to adapt him into bg2. i have tried to keep him in character as much as possible and he already has a background.

in warhammer (thats what the game's called) he can also cast a few spells (thus my query about spells).

i think he fits in pretty well and he will have a band of followers to accompany him.

as for my lack of replies of late, im 14 so dont have much time on the internet because of time constraints. i havent even started playing yet (!!!!!!!!!).

by the way, thanks to all u guys whove helped, i have a HEAPS better understanding of the game now.

oh by the way, here's what i'll probably have as a band of followers -

    paladin (human)(male)*
    ranger/cleric (elf)(female)*
    specialist mage (human) (male)
    bard (half-elf) (male)*
    thief (halfling) (male)
    (*=must have - part of leader's bkgrnd)
i may drop one to go on one of the romances. any suggestions?

cya later doods, i just got informed about an award i won at the local eisteddfod (speech and drama section) and i have to go and get it. im so wrapped!

    bye

my best ever roll was 96 - unfortunately it wasn't for my main character (one of the user created multiplayer characters) and it just popped up on the 2nd roll
