Nigel Farage; Hero of the British Isles

Hah, I doubt it. There's no right wing, Euro sceptic, racist, anti-gay British members on here that I know about ;-).

 

I'm fairly Euro sceptic but he's far from being a hero of anywhere, let alone the British Isles

 

I am with Harbourboy never heard of him. Who is he?

 

He's the leader of a political party called UKIP (UK Independence Party - quite what/who we need to get 'independent' from, I don't know). They are right wing, concentrating on issues such as stopping immigrants coming into the country, moving those who have moved in out, and removing the UK from the EU. They also want to do other wonderfully tolerant things like stopping gay marriage and suchlike. Basically, very angry and not very nice people who could probably benefit from getting out more. Unfortunately they've managed to do quite well lately because everyone is pissed off with the other 3 major parties (LIB DEM, LABOUR, TORIES) and immigration and the EU are hot topics with the general idiotic public. He's got a history of racist and homophobic remarks, as do other members of the party, but to be fair, he's quite good at public speaking (or 'rabble-rousing' as my brother puts it).

Thank you, Barmy. Based on the info you have given I have a suggestion on how to celebrate his birthday. Seriously, get a picture of him, take it down to your local pub, stick it up on the dart board and use it for target practice with darts of course. Won't really accomplish anything but you can bet on where you can hit and maybe win a drink or two and have a nice relaxing evening with your mates.

 

I guess the dude shortened his name -- in earlier elections he went by:

Wow! Judging from what BA told us, and some vids on the net, this Farage-Olé-Biscuitbarrel makes Geert Wilders a decent choice.

Barmy doesn't know what he's talking about, he's either intentionally misleading you or is incredibly ignorant. Everything he said is a lie, aside from UKIP opposing the EU. UKIP is perfectly fine with immigrants in Britain and doesn't want to "kick them out." What they oppose is state-sponsored multiculturalism, and rightly so. They argue that if someone wants to immigrate to Britain, they should British first and foremost. It has nothing to do with race or ethnicity, anymore than being an American has anything to do with race or ethnicity. For a "racist" party, they sure do have a lot of non-white MEPs and MP candidates. Anyone who is/was a member of the BNP, EDL, National Front, etc. is banned from joining the party. UKIP's official policy has always been to support civil partnerships for homosexuals. What UKIP opposes is requiring churches, mosques, etc. to perform marriage ceremonies if it goes against their beliefs.

Sorry I can't resist this one. You are telling me, Nakia, that Barmy Army doesn't know what he is talking about? Hmmm. Now just stop and think a moment. Really think about what you are saying.

 

Nakia, perhaps he's read some very reputable articles about the subject ... a good documentary ... that's more informative than living there.

 

True, T2, after all seeing a forest from the distance is better than actually walking in it. "Can't see the forest for the trees." type of thing. Unbiased articles of course.

 

Well Nigel Farage is one of these right wing political blowhards who certainly know how to complain and oppose a whole lot but don't actually offer any serious solution. Except a resignation from the European Union. Also as far as I know he has not actually accomplished anything so far. I don't know any major legislation he's worked on that would have passed through in the EU parliament or in UK. So I think I'll pass the celebration until he has actually accomplished something worthwhile. To be fair as Barmy said he's quite a talented speaker though and he's rhetoric can be quite entertaining. Still, being a successful clown and being a successful politician are two different things, even though some have succeeded in being both.

Only six people attended the event, but overall it went pretty well and we had a good discussion. I look forward to having more, hopefully larger, events in the future.
