[IMG] Did anyone see this section on the NWN board? I'm excited that scaling will be in NWN.

    scalable encounters in NWN:

"You just create the type of monster you wish to place at each level of the hierarchy. When the encounter is triggered it spawns in the appropriate mix of creatures from the supplied hierarchy.

For example: an Orc themed encounter has regular orcs in the bottom level. Let's say each Orc has a challenge rating of 1. This means 1 orc is a reasonable challenge for 1 first level character.

Next up in the hierarchy we place an orc archer who has a challenge rating of 2. so two first level characters should be challenged by one Orc archer.

Next we have an Orc shaman. Let's say the orc shaman has a challenge rating of 5.

If two first level characters trigger our encounter. The encounter could spawn two regular orcs, or one orc archer. It randomly decides what to spawn based on criteria we specified when we set up the encounter.

If a party of three third level characters trigger the encounter they have a challenge rating of 9. We could have a shaman, an archer and two basic orcs.

In short, the system allows you to customize encounters for the creatures you want."

I think this is great. It will be a nice tool to keep the game balanced and challenging for all parties. What is your take on it?

[IMG] Great idea in principle, should mean a DM could set up an encounter and not worry whether 3 or 13 of us show up.
However, it seems they screwed up the math. CR1 relates to a party of 4 lvl 1 characters.
Read DMG pages 100 - 102. This led to a flame war on the ALFA board, where the concensus was that PLAYED PROPERLY a 5th lvl orc shaman should be able to toast 5 lvl 3 players. I think they intend to play it out so place your bets - the orc or the players?

[IMG] No more bets - the orc won.

P.S Amazon are giving NWN release date as 16th sept 01 - nice to have a date, but don't count your dragons til they're hatched.
