    A few reasons I can think of to copy a show rather thatn just air the origional, especially when the origional is from another country. And some reasons for this show in particular:

    1. The humor does not translate well. Anytime they refer to English events, areas or politics, no one in the US will understand. The US version of english is different from British so sometimes a US viewer will not understand what was just said.

    2. Many shows rely on actor recognition to attract viewers. Red Foxx was a well known comedian and took the part of Steptoe. Without him, the show might never have been watched.

    3. In the US, this show was one of the early ones to bring blacks into American TV and to attract a black audience. It was a show that could appeal to mainstream viewers and to blacks. It featuread an almost all black cast. Redd Foxx was a big reason for its acceptance.

    Steptoe would never have been a success on commercial TV. It could have been a success on PBS (Public Broadcasting System) which has shown a lot of British series over the years. But the PBS audiance is small compared to the commercial networks.

    Fairly sure I'm right, but I think IJA applies anyway.

    This show started in 2000, runs for about a month a year (one episode a week) and is narrated/presented by a member of the House of Lords.

    Said member is a staunch Labour party supporter, although he has had some high profile disagreements with them regarding government policy in his particular area of expertise.
