Thank goodness the netherlands haven't got compulsory service anymore! But even If we had I would still decline the 'offer'. I don't think armies solve anything (and no I don't know a better solution).

I believe it's different because you have to want to enter the military in the US (with the exception in the past of the draft) in order to be there.

If you are required to go, you go whether you want to or not, and in the latter case, you'd leave as soon as you could. And I'd venture to say that given the sentiments I've seen on this board re. war and killing, none of these guys wanted to make the military their career.

Ejsmith, are you doing guard duty without live rounds? Then whats the point in having a guard?

I spend eight months as motorised infantry before going to our speciel guard company. These last three months has been almost non-stop guard duty. And we are always armed with live rounds. "With five round, without round in the chamber, load riffle...."

Ofcourse, we use small five rounds mags, so a lot of the tourists don't think we are armed....

I was armed as well during my guard duty, with full 30 round mags. And I wasnt on a funky special duty like Grovflab but sitting and guarding and opening the door at an office building that some people called a headquarter. It aint guard duty if you got no ammo imo.

Since it is easy to refuse to do military service but to do civil service - like in a hospital (or wherever) - instead, military service in germany became de facto volunteering. I have always been armed when on guard duty. I doubt there's much sense in carrying a rifle unloaded when you're supposed to guard anything, even a barracks complex.

Well, at least you're not Vatican guards. I know those guys are special forces and all, but they wear crazy jumpsuits and carry halberds. ;)

I would've joined the marines if I hadn't been accepted to College last year. I might still join, when I get my diploma. Don't know, I'll see about that in a year or 3 :D

Greek legislation gives the option of civil service too, but the fact ,that it is 16 months in the army or 3 years of civil service, forces almost everybody to join the army.

Ejsmith, required service is totally different from being a professional soldier. The 16 months, that I have spent in the army, were a major obstacle for my professional and personal life.

    Look.

A lot of you are over in Europe. I'm here in the States.

We're going to see things differently.

I'm not criticizing anyone. I'm just saying the situations are different. And depending on exactly what kind of Mickey Mouse games you've been "required" to play, everyone is going to view the situation as unique or different.

    That is all.

I was in the army for three years and now I'm a "Supplementary Holding Reservist", aka "Canada's last hope". :p I'd definitely describe myself as "against war and killing" but I recognise that sometimes people have to do it, and I might as well be one of them if the going gets rough. I expected to hate it but to grit my teeth and do my duty, but to my total surprise my three years' service, in peacetime of course, were paradise- outdoors every day, hanging out with really fun people, keeping active and fit, blowing stuff up, yelling at terrified teenagers- did I mention I worked in training? I volunteered to go to Croatia as a peacekeeper but there was a really long waiting list (the number of Canadians who want to peacekeep far exceeds the number Canada can afford to equip) so I never got the call.

If it weren't for this accursed physical limitation that the military over here in the good old USA have a problem with I'd have joined the Air Force right out of high school. I had three years of JROTC in high school and loved every moment of it (even when I was being yelled at.) Now, I have to settle for the Civil Air Patrol which lacks professionalism (among its officers which is really embarassing because I am an officer (1st Lieutenant)) and it drives me up the wall when some of those... um... people treat it like the "gentleman's flying club" or some crap like that. Oh well, at least the organization is part of the Air Force so I got what I wanted, sort of, in a round about way, etc.

All this talk makes wonder, how the hell did we turn into gamers?
