So, Bush picked a fight this time. I guess he figured it could not hurt (and might even help some, if it draws attention from the Plame stuff).

I'm off, gotta read the commentary :)

Well, looks like Bush struck gold this time. So far, there seems to be nothing especially embarassing about Alito. The most controversy seems to be based around an opinion of his that a woman should tell her husband before having an abortion. While this may be troublesome to strong defenders of abortion rights, I would think that the average person would view this as a reasonable opinion.

Of course, he is no starry eye liberal, either. The description which fits best seems to be "solidly conservative". Still, I wonder if the right does not reads too much into him. It is true that he was more conservative than his colleagues on the 3rd Circuit, but I don't think he would go so far as voting to overturn Roe.

This is probably the best we could expect from a Bush nominee. Even so, the left may to try to stop his confirmation, but it doesn't look like they have much chance.

He is undoubtedly more qualified than Meiers, which of course, isn't saying much. Furthermore, saying he is more conservative than the rest of the 3rd Circuit isn't saying a whole lot either, given that they are among the most liberal in the country. Still, I remain uneasy about this selection.
