    Evolution:

Roman empire: "He is a Christrian, kill him"
14th century: "He is a witch, kill him"
20th century: "He is a commie, kill him"
21st century: "He is a terrorist, kill him"

Different catch phrase, same result. Smart aint it.

    Forgot about me then archangel?

Not really an expert on evolution but I will not permit such foolishness about immunology :)

Just like to add one minor point to clarify something: most of this talk about different pathogens attacking us now that we have modern medicine and different diseases... That's not the evolution of humans but the evolution of pathogens. In normal circumstances the pathogen and host would evolve at the same time - trying to 'outsmart' one another. But in case of humans we are applying evolutionary pressures on the pathogens without evolving ourselves. Example: Strains of bacteria resistant to a multitude of antibiotics are being formed. Because they have to expend so much effort to stay resistant they would (under normal circumstances) easily be outcompeted by other bacteria. But now the prevailing evolutionary pressure are drugs. We might not be evolving anymore, but we certainly changed the course of microbial evolution quite effectively.

[IMG] vukodlak! we thought you were dead (or had serious problems with your PCRs!) as far as your red-queen stuff is concerned...

the coevolutionary counterpart to each pathogen (man) is still evolving, but only in an abstract sense, if we could consider medicines and drugs to be constituants of the human immune system. following this arguement, individuals without access to modern medicine have 'defective' immune systems and are as hard-up as those with genetically-determined immunological deficiencies, and both groups are selected against.

just an idea, i do deal mostly with theory after all! :p
