I couldn't agree with him more! All the way! (Although, if they had included more things or extended already existing ones, it would've been worth an extra ...)

Probably the best I've ever seen, only some of Kurosawa's films can compete, methinks.

All the characters were well played, but I really loved to see Boromir in the film, and Merry and Pippin too. Although a certain dwarf had the best lines...

In short, this is the One Film, and will continue to be so until next Christmas.

 

I saw the movie today. Just found a few flaws in the movie that kinda bugged me ... nothing serious ... just kinda wondering:

1. The elf never ran outta arrows after killing millions and millions of orcs.

2. After a bloody fight with roughly fifty orcs, the humans, hobbits, and dwarf are all scratched up and bleeding from atleast one place while the elf hasn't even misplaced a hair.


2.5 No I'm not racist towards elves.

3. The Scenery never moved (the trees in the background didn't sway with the breeze/wind/etc...)

Nothing too serious, just a few minor flaws I had to pick out just because I've heard so much about the movie.

 

Bloody marvellous.

I admit that Ian McKellin's break dancing Gandalf was a little unexpected, but by the time the great man's duel with the not-undersized Balrog came all this had been forgotten. I was a little surprised that Saruman's betrayal was revealed as soon as it happened and not just by Gandalf in Rivendell as in the book, but I suppose it makes sense as Frodo's descent into danger and darkness comes much more suddenly in the film. As for the omission of Tom Bombadil, all I can say is that there are many things I'd rather see than Elijah Woods, Billy Boyd et al frolicking naked after an involuntary sojourn with some barrow wights and as such it can only be a good thing. Plus, the film was plenty long enough already without the addition of the novel's less essential chapters.
Choreography was superb; applause actually reverberated around the cinema as Aragorn decapitated a burly orc captain, and Sean Bean performed a suitably poignant death of Boromir. Legolas is, quite simply, the man. Orlando Bloom did a fine job of bringing him to the screen.

Roll on next December and the Two Towers.

 

LOL!!! I forgot about the naked running through the daffodils! Yes! I have to agree...I didn't miss that.

 

Just saw it today, 1:00 pm Friday for the first showing of the day, the even then, the theater was packed. I must say, I was in absolute awe from the first narative to the end scene. It was possibly the most amazing movie I have ever seen. It was greater than even my imagination could have captured in my pnp games. Just breath taking. The story was riviting, the setting was magnificent, the monsters were....mostrous. Heh, the orcs and goblins were far more frightening than I had ever imagined. And the Balrog was *the* way to do a demon. Wow. Even something as simple as a butterfly was done superbly and with great signifigance by the special effects people. All of the acting was good to fantasic, without any of the horrible overacting/cliched acting that seems to be present in most fantasy pictures. I was even pleased with Liv Tyler as Arwen (likely because I didn't read the books). She played a very credible elf, as did Kate Blanchet. Really, every race was played credibly, even the drawf (to a degree...but really, how well can you develop a dwarven character). All in all, I was transfixed for more than three hours, and was extemely sad when the movie was over. I wanted to go back out and buy another ticket right there on the spot (damned christmas shopping I had to do ) I would have definately wanted to see a 10 hour marathon of the entire series on the spot, and I desprately hope that one day I will have the opertunity to see such a thing on the big screen.

All in all, 11 out of 10 stars. Best film of the year hands down, one of my favorites of all time.

I saw the film yesterday, and it certainly went beyond my expectations.

The day started with troubles. We were going to take a two hour train trip to see the film on the largest THX cinema in northern europe. When we buy the tickets, the guy tells us that there has been an accident at a station we were going through. We were told we had to use a bus half the way. No problem we thought, since we had a lot of time. When we come to the place where the bus is supposed to be, we are getting ready to leave the train, but just to be sure my friend asks the ticket collector if we should leave. If he hadn't done that, we would have left the train and there would have been no bus waiting for us.

Then we arrived at the cinema to pick up our tickets which we have bought over the internet. We are told they have computer troubles there, and we have to pick up the tickets at another cinema in the city. We take the subway down there, but there they don't have computer problems (at least the lady says so), and our Lord of the Rings tickets are not there! We are all extremly mad, and the lady shoves us over to another person which tells us they have problems with the computers as well. He sends us back to the first cinema again. There my friend enters the desk, tells the lady the numbers, but now the tickets are gone for real. Suddenly she remembers that 4 (out of almost 1000!) tickets had been printed out by mistake earlier that day. Those four tickets were ours, and were hanging in an envelope on the wall...

Finally we can see the movie. My expectations had been growing, but this was something special. The story of the ring at the beginning was simply brilliant, and when I first saw the Shire it was too much for me. For the first time in my 17 year old life I cried at the cinema. Tears are still coming when I think of some of the scenes. The film was just so beautiful, and way too much of it was just like I had imagined while reading the book.

The music, the setting, the characters and maybe especially the big, landscape shots made this awesome book come to life in a marvellous way. Every single detail was so perfect, and I didn't breathe for the three hours it lasted. Even if I knew almost exactly what was going to happen, the Nazgûl were scary as hell (even Bilbo was that in a couple of scenes), and the death of Boromir was really sad (though it doesn't happen before Two Towers).

Peter Jackson, you are my hero and you can consider me your friend for life now.

 

I go to the movie tonigyht (at least for the first time, i'll see it more then once I think)... after the reactions that others had, I really begin to think this will be the best movie ever!

 

Yup, brilliant. Definitely the best fantasy movie I've ever seen and quite possibly the best movie, period. While there are a lot of little things I miss (like Fatty Bolger and Tom Bombadil), they clearly carried the feel of the books into the movie. Books and movies don't do the same things and what movies do, this one does extremely well.

I'll probably take some flak for this, but for me, I actually enjoyed the movie more than the book, and I've never been able to claim that before. In Tolkien's defense, I didn't really get the chance to just sit down and imerse myself in the story, I read a part here and a piece there, so I'll probably read it again.
I agree with Mollusken about how the movie writers handled the initial war of the ring. I thought some of those scenes were the most chilling and exciting, and it gave the audience some nice background about the ring's importance. I also liked the way in which Gandalf's capture by Saruman was handled and I thought the whole Saruman betrayal was nicely done. I also thought it was fitting for the movie to include the fall of Boromir and the capture of Merry and Pippin to be included in the finale. To date I have only just started reading 'The Two Towers' and I thought that the end of 'Fellowship' (the book) seemed to be lacking something (excitement). Now that I'm well into the second volume, my opinion is somewhat changed.
I found that the movie was a nice blend of action and story developement, and I didn't even mind the inclusion of the Arwen romance bit. All in all a great interpretation of the book. I find that Tolkien sometimes likes to tell the reader about certain events through the memories and recollections of his characters instead of first hand, whereas the movie gives you the goods as they actually happen.

 

When you read the book, you have more knowledge. You can still follow the story, but you will miss details... and details is what makes a good story a fantastic story, and it makes a good movie a fabulous movie. That's why books are often better then movies, a book contains much more details then a movie can show... You know less of background of people, races and places...

The movie was great, especially the whole environment... ik looked all like Fantasy. Unfortunatly, some things in the movie are different from the book, also some things that could be remained the same.... The book is still the best and the movie is also fantastic!

Yet I realized at the how hard it must be for people that don't don't how the story continues and ends.... for them it will probably become a long next year

I saw it the first three times they showed it here, and it was just as good all three times. Hell, it was mighty awesome! And I would go back for more if I weren't a bit short of money at the moment.

Seeing the nine ride out of Barad-dûr gave me the chills. Oh my god. And the fight scenes were fast paced and amazing too. I enjoyed the movie so much I think I smiled all the way through.

Having to wait another year for Two Towers is almost unbearable torture. Hmm, a year in coma? Maybe...

And let us all hope EA won't screw up with their license to make games of the movies.
