Lich killing

Discussion in 'BG2: Throne of Bhaal (Classic)' started by Rathan, Apr 23, 2002.

  1. Erm... Is it just me? Or do I have the old diablo way? Hack 'n slash with weapons +4 will kill a lich faster than you can say, "oops I forgot about my spells."

With the improved mages mod (part of Weimer's package), most of the tricks discussed here to battle liches do not work. Download it and you'll see what I mean. When fighting guys with this mod, Warding Whip, Ruby Ray, Breach, and even Spellstrike have no effect. They won't remove anything from him. My only guess is that the lich has a number of spell shields on him, except for the fact that he never cast them. Anyone have any advice for battling these liches with this mod.

When fighting liches in the standard game, just send your fighters in close, cast breach and proceed with the beatdown. None of these guys has ever given such a problem that I needed to use cheese.

If you are fighting the demilich, knock out his first form the way you would any other lich. For the second form, equip Minsc, Korgan, and your main character (if you are a berserker) with +4 or better weapons and have them rage. Rage renders them immune to imprisonment, so have your other characters run away while they pound him.

The "fastest" way is to lay traps where the thing will spawn, like with the liches that have Kangaxx's body parts. You know they are coming out of the tomb, so lay traps in the general vicinity. They set them off as soon as they come out, and they die immediately. It may not be the most exciting, but it is the fastest -- as well as in character for a thief. Same in Watcher's Keep. The spawning monsters on level 6 always appear in the same spot. Traps take them out as soon as they get there.

Even low level characters know something about liches, if only from stories. Also, theoretically, sages have that kind of info, and you should be able to find stuff in books in a temple of Oghma.

I don't think any demi-lich in the game spawns in such a way that you can set traps, unless you already know Kangaxx is going to have to be killed twice and set one batch of traps far from his spawning point. Still, a control circlet is pretty fast. With that, have them imprison themselves. Not dead but out of the way, and you still get the experience points.

How do you figure it's cheating if you use a totally stock game with a totally stock thief played in character? Just because you don't think it's fun doesn't mean a thief wouldn't set a bunch of traps in front of a tomb he suspects contains a powerful undead creature. It's the best weapon he's got, so of course he's going to use it against a powerful opponent when he has a chance. I suppose you think it cheese and cheating for a mage to rest and recover spells too. If you don't like thinking or playing like a thief, you don't have to, but don't knock others who do.

I'm not sure about the liches - because your character wouldn't know that they were a lich. If he puts down traps around every tomb he opens, then fine. And he has certainly never been to the bowels of Watcher's Keep, so wouldn't know where the enemies would spawn.

On the contrary, the tombs of the liches in the Kangaxx quest radiate power and evil (according to the message you get when you click on them before you open them), so you know something bad is in them. Whatever it is, it can't hurt to set a trap or two. In Watcher's Keep, the liches are the fourth undead batch of creatures to spawn in exactly the same place, and all the monsters from all the balls spawn in the same place. If after the second ball you haven't figured out where the monsters are all spawning, you're not paying attention.

[IMG] Devas... they are a high lvl skill, are they not?
By the time your cleric even has that ability he has a powerful "turn undead". My lvl 25 priest of Lathander blows standard Liches to smithereens within 2 or 3 seconds... that is pretty quick. So yeah, a powerful turn undead seems to be the qickest way I have witnessed. However, I have no idea what lvl "turning undead" must be before you can start to turn the Liches into chunks of undead flesh, or what lvl it must be to kill Demi Liches.

BTW, I dual classed that cleric into a mage and started again.

Yep. Priests or Paladins can select them once they hit roughly 3 million xp
