[IMG] ToB allows mages to wield Ioun stones, and should not be considered for this forum. The ToB forum is for people who have ToB installed, not necessarily the expansion in itself.

Story wise mages created Ioun stones, so it would be rather weird if they can't use it (as in current SoA). If you really really want to use them in SoA, you could either buy ToB or download a 3rd Party fix for it (WARNING, 3rd party can screw up your game).

The fix is obtainable at baldurdash: http://members.home.net/mrkevvy/

By regular AD&D rules, mages can use them. But in BG2, they can't.

Lokken's right, they fixed it in ToB... but that isn't the game under discussion here.

Wow...thanks for all the tips, folks...

I'm finding out that at the lower levels, the quests Elijah undertakes are primarily item-related. He's not quite ready for random vamp encounters in Athkatla, so he hasn't gone to see Linvail yet, which for the moment means no amulet of power. But he bought his robe of Vecna and his bracers AC3, so he's decently equipped.

Elijah finished of the Maevar quest without any problems and moseyed on over to the Copper Coronet. There he discovered that he was lonely and ponied up the 50 gold for a little nooky. Hendak's quest and the slaver boat were no problem, primarily because when he leveled up to 12 he picked up the death spell. Kobolds and hobgoblins, beware.

Elijah and I then spent the next several hours loading and reloading the Twisted Rune battle, for no other reason than to pick up that damn staff. I stopped counting reloads at about 20. In this battle Elijah discovered a great many things.

    * Skull trap, for example, is worthless.
    * protection from undead scrolls are indeed priceless. He had to use two in the final battle, but it helped that neither Shangalar nor the vamp could see him.
    * His love of the improved invisibility/SI-divination tactic was only reinforced. It is the most efficient mage-killer he can think of. He's looking forward to Lavok and Tolgerias, though he's not quite sure yet what to do about those damn demons.
    * True Sight is indispensable. That bitch-mage, who is at least level 20, won't cast her protection spells unless she can see you, and she couldn't see Elijah. A spell sequencer (had to purchase the scroll somewhere) got three Acid Arrows in, which ultimately killed her (lucky rolls).
    * The one fighter-type in there was laughably easy.
    * The beholder was extremely difficult and was giving Elijah the most trouble. Mages may not be able to target improved invisible critters, but beholders can. Elijah had to resort to a lot of running away/line-of-sight tactics in order to kill him, but kill him he did.
    * Elijah has learned that not only can he not afford to be seen, he can not afford even to be hit. A sorcerer taking damage is a sorcerer who's not casting spells, and a solo sorcerer who's not casting spells is a dead sorcerer.

They went down in the following order: Mage, beholder, fighter (or whatever he is), vampire, Shangalar. Apart from the mage's contingency spells (circumvented by the triple acid arrow and some extremely lucky damage rolls), neither of the spellcasters got a single spell off. He recalled his humiliation at the hands of the mad priest of Cyric, thought it had style, and beat Shangalar to death with his (shiny new) stick. He was out of spells by then anyway.

Next up -- Planar prison (for the boots of speed), then on to the stronghold quest.

Anybody with any tips for demon killing?

There was a topic a while ago on the Staff of the Magi...I seem to recall someone downloading a fix so that it actually DID have Protection from Evil on it. Yes, not only did it show the visual effects, you actually WERE protected from evil with the fix. At any rate, I'll try to find it and post the link later.

[Edit]You can download the Staff of the Magi fix here. Just unzip and point the new file into your Override folder. Demon-slaying should be MUCH easier for you now. Hope I helped.[/Edit]

First of all, I would remind you all: Sorcerer is THE BEST SPELLCASTER-CLASS IN THE WHOLE DAMN GAME, period.

About the soloing: it's a good idea. [ToB stuff edited out - BTA]

Yeah, it's difficult... no, VERY HARD in the early stages of the game (in Athkatla), but when you reach a good level and what is the most important, have really good items (robe of vecna, amulet of power, ring of wizardy, cloak of mirroring, etc.) then you will become a real killing machine! [More ToB stuff - BTA]

But what the most important thing is the spell management. If you make a mistake in choice of a spell, you will perish! Always save befor gaining new spells, and READ SORCERER STRATEGY GUIDES!! They can be very helpfull, providing inside information about the spells. This is not a spoiler, so do not hesitate.

Thanks...I will load up that staff fix. That will come in handy.

Haven't been playing much lately, for obvious reasons, but sat down for a couple hours today. Elijah made it through the planar prison with only a couple reloads (the warden thrall can apparently detect invisibility...that plus power word stun plus wilting plus his insta-death spells made for a grueling battle).

We also had a go at Kangaxx, and discovered we just aren't ready. Elijah is either really unlucky or just doesn't yet have enough MMMeteors to do the requisite amount of damage. (His attacks per round with the sling don't do enough damage to stay ahead of K's regeneration.)

Next up: planar sphere, and after, maybe a bit o' dragon hunting..
