"Thank you. Yes I think I will decorate it with this feather and prehaps some of Salana's. Is there anything you need? I suppose we will leave in the morning. I'm rather scared. I've never ever done anything like this. We don't even know what we are facing."

She laughed a little., "Oh, I can sing songs about adventurers going off to fight evil. It all sounds so grand in the songs."

 

Kayn was in the Travellers camp. He was looking around, looking at the other Chosen. He wasn't sure what to think, he hadn't really befriended any of them, but in the morning he was supposed to go and put his life on the line for what basically amounted to strangers. Kayn would have no second thoughts about this if it was friends of his, but he hadn't connected with anyone here.

He was drinking a glass of water, listening to Reyanna's music and thinking these thoughts. He felt the urge to abandon this, and be the focus of one prophecy, he didn't want this.

These thoughts were very apparent on his face as he stared into the distance.

 

Breyd sat down at the travellers camp she'd scraped some food together for her companions, but she herself was too tired to eat, she watched her friends eating and smiled lovingly at them. She took one last look round the camp to see everyone settling down for the night, except one. She took in the look upon his face and sighed “Can I never get some rest for myself, is this how grams always felt” the selfish thoughts whistled through her mind and were gone.

*Mnemeth you Car’ygal know more of this than I, don’t you*

*Yes, but…*

*It’s alright I don’t need to know more, but Kayn does he is thinking of leaving despite my warning and if he does he will fail at everything. We will fail also and so will you and thereby the Gods design, and evil will prevail and that cannot happen. Talk to him and with his companion impress upon him the importance of what we do*

*I will beloved it is good that you can see these things without my help, it means I can hoard my strength for when you really need it*

*May that day be a long time coming* Breyd thought at her companion as she broke contact.

She saw the startled look on Kayn’s face as the Car’ygals started to talk to him, and saw his shoulders drop, as the weight of what was happening here was impressed upon him. Breyd stood up and leaning on her staff walked up to Kayn and patted him on his shoulder and then raising her voice she spoke again to the camp.

“Attention please, I will repeat this again and please all of you take note and if necessary can the Car’ygal impress the importance upon their chosen. ALL OF US MUST LEAVE together in the morning travellers, chosen and Car’ygal, no exceptions, no waverings, no I’ll-catch-up-laters. If we don’t all leave on this journey together then we may as well not leave and let the Shadowed and the Stalker win.

“I know some of you don’t fully understand what is happening, or why you were chosen, or whether this is more important than other things, prophecies; just know this that tonight, tomorrow and the day after this is the most important thing ever in your lives, nothing else matters. After that the chips will fall as they may but for now there is no choice if we want to have a choice in the future.

“And now let us all get some well-earned rest and leave afresh in the morning. Thanks for listening and may your gods be with you now and always.”

 

"That doesn't reassure me much." Kayn said loudly as he suddenly got to his feet. Without looking back, he stalked off muttering "If it's that important, I'll be here in the morning, but until then leave me alone."

He felt bound to the others, much in the same way that he felt bound to The Ten, the only problem was that he was friends with the other nine even though they all knew that one day they would kill each other or help each other. With this group there was no bond other than being Chosen for Kayn. He couldn't see himself takeing a spear for Holon, Lena, Torben, Miost, Roo, Reyanna, Breyd, or Alandro.

He went to the forest. He knew it was dangerous, but he didn't really care. He hoped that a Weygrip, or another monster would be there.

 

Rayenna sighed as she watched Kayn leave. She wasn't an empath but bards needed to feel their audience and she could 'feel' the mixture of emotions from the others.

She swept into a medley of funny, risque and just plain silly ditties.

 

Holon ate ravishly, he ate through Breyds speech and Kayns outburst. He only stopped when the bards funny songs. He grinned through afull mouth at the silly songs. Holon felt a nudge at his side and he saw Lena was tilting her head towards the tents. He got the hint, he got up and escorted Lena to some tents. Lena went in but Holon and Beratli stood by the entrance. Holon took chance to ask Beratli what was he.

" Beratli.... are you one of the Car'ygal? " he asked unsure how to pronouce it. Holon didn't have to wait long.

" Ya I am, but I" he paused. "I became jealous." He hung his head in shame." I had a hard time getting a Chosen, the others were so beautiful people flocked to them many times I have been killed before I grew old enough to defend myself. You are only the fifth person who accepted me. You see, when Car'ygal die they are revived only when evil shows it's ugly face again. I became angry at the others for their beauty and their power. All I am is a normal minotaur, I have no powers of flight or song, I am maybe stronger than normal but that hasn't helped me against many foes. I am one of Car'ygal who are killed the most. It is odd that we are all here together that has never happend and I don't know any of the ones here, but they are all more impressive than me even the metal devourer has an impressive power." Beratli paused, tears of shame in his eyes, he hated himself for his vainity." Do you realize that you are the first that I have ever told about my problems. I began to hate the others and I hated their pretty little voices probing my mind, so I cut them off. I hate it, sometimes I die and I hope I never wake up but I do every time!" Finaly his self-composure and grabbed Holon close and hugged him, sobbing on his shoulder.

Holon was amazed this gruff minotaur had never shown his feelings. Holon suddenly felt his mind expand as Beratli opened his mind for the first in decades. Holon hugged Beratli back and they embraced for many minutes, untill Beratli walked off. Holon knew he needed time to think. Now he could talk to him in his mind so he let him go. Holon also had much to think about.

Lena readied herself for a deserved sleep. With Holon and Beratli talking to each other outside, she shut her ears and let them have their privacy. She loosened her braid and untangled it with her fingers acting as combs. Worry kept her from falling asleep immediately. Eventually, her mind pushed it back and opened itself to dreams.

The Car'ygal were gathered in a forest clearing. All were present and they all held hands/paws/wings and danced in a circle. In the center was Rayenna, playing her lyre and tapping her toe to keep rhythm. The other Chosen were scattered throughout the circle. Miost and Torben were playing knucklebones with Roo keeping score. Kayn went through a battle warm-up. Alandro played cards with Breyd. Holon...Lena spun around, looking for him...where was Holon?

Lena tried to ask her friends, but everyone ignored her. She chewed on her lip in frustration. Where could Holon have gone? Beratli was still here, so he must be close by. She walked to an aquafier spring. Holon sat near the edge and gazed into the water. Lena sat beside him. "What do you see that's so interesting?" He faced her, then motioned for her to look herself. Peering down, she saw her face and Holon's and smiled. Suddenly, her features changed. Her skin grew wrinkled and leathery, her eyes dimmed with blindness and her hair grayed and thinned. Lena became her dead mother.

Screaming loudly, she jolted upright. Her skin and hair were damp with sweat and her heart pounded loudly in her ears.

 

Holon rushed in his knife flashing yelling a battle cry. He became confused that no one was there, he looked down to Lena and he realized she had a bad dream. He asked if she wanted to talk about it, she just mumbled later. He told her he would stay in the tent and protect her from dreams too. It seemed to work because Lena fell asleep again. Holon took his time and watched Lena as she slept, her perfect face, so peaceful and calm. He loved Lena even more that moment and he whispered " I love you " before he too fell asleep. Beratli came back thankful that Holon was asleep he didn't want talk anymore. He had been sleeping for years before he was revived. He didn't need much sleep so he sat down and noticed his horns were growing. he had always kept them sharp so he spent the night sharpening them to perfection.

 

Miost walked home, watching Surion's scales glint in the moonlight as she soared through the cool night air.

You're getting pretty big! He observed.

Am I? I didn't notice! She flew in a circle over his head, Soon you may be able to ride me!

He laughed heartily, Yes, that would be fun!

He and Surion arrived home a few minutes later, and were greeted warmly by their family, whom had been getting ready for bed before they arrived. Miost explained the situation, with the occasional input from Surion, who was sitting at the kitchen table, wagging her tail.

His father started, "You're a Chosen?! Oh, I don't know Miost. You are needed for chores, and with all the business I'm getting--"

His mother interrupted his father, "Yes, you can go." His mother had always wanted to adventure when she was younger, but her father denied her dream.

"Bu--"

"No, Ashir, he's going. I don't want his future to be disrupted. This will be good for him. No further discussion. Miost, go to bed, you have to get up early, and Surion, go with him, you'll need your rest too." And at that, she walked to her bedroom, Ashir trailing behind her.

Miost, stunned, turned and walked to his room, and fell asleep as soon as his cheek hit the pillow.

 

Roo sat in the circle and listened to the songs of Rayenna. When he closed his eyes it almost felt like at home, where he spent most of his time in taverns. He didn't know the others well by now but he thought they all would be reliable companions.

Smiling he emptied his cup of beer and prepared a place to sleep. Within minutes he slept deep after all those new things he encountert since he stole the egg one night before.

So he lay there on his back, snoring loudly, with Mephis sleeping convoluted on his waist.

 

Breyd ignored the music and satin a tent preparing to sleep, Bast curled up at one side claening herself; she looked at Mnemeth already he was half the size of the panther

*You're growing quickly beloved*
[Yes soon we will be able to fly together]
*But what of Bast? She...*
{I will be fine, you will hunt the skies while I hunt the ground}

At this Breyd buried her face in Bast's fur quiet tears streaming down her face, the knowledge that had come from her spirit walk burned deep and haunted her.

*I am not sure if I can bear these burdens*
{I know my fate from your knowledge and will be fine with it, though I will miss...}
[We need not think of that just yet]
*It's hard not to*
[Still we will have each other always beloved]
*Yes alwaysn beloved*
{Always beloved}

With that Breyd laid down and went to sleep as did Bast at her side, Mnemeth laid his head on the dwarf a silver tear slowly fell down his cheek and soaked her tunic.

 

As the camp settled down to sleep Rayenna stopped singing and soften the music of the lyre to a soothing dreamy sound.

A few Travellers where standing sentry but most had settled in for the night. Rayenna looked at Salana nestled by her side. She had explained a little more about the Car'ygal. Having lived with the Order since birth Rayenna was confortable with the idea and Salana was a perfect fit. Except prehaps for her predatory nature, Rayenna figured she would just have to get used to that.

After a little while Rayenna and Salana retired to their bed under the family wagon.

 

Holon woke up as the sun rose. He jumped up angry that he fell asleep on the watch. He hustled outside and met up with Beratli who was mumbling to himself. Holon still felt odd, about feeling Beratlis feelings. Beratli horns were only an inch but impressively sharp. Holon sat down beside him and waited for the others to wake. They spent the time enjoying eachothers thoughts.

 

Ooh, HOT! HOT!!

Miost opened his eyes and saw that Surion, sleeping on his his chest, and burnt a whole through his shirt with her breath. "AAAH!! HOT!!"

He jumped up, and just before Surion fell to the floor, she swooped up and flew around the room frantically, knocking over things and sending them flying.

What?? What?!?! She screamed.

"You burnt a whole in me!" He yelled at her, while ripping off his shirt and examining the wound.

No, did I? She laughed, Oh, so I did.

That's it?

If you're going to lead these Chosen, you're going to have to toughen up!

I'm leading them!? What? Since when?!

You were the first to be Chosen. You are the leader.

 

"I am the leader of the Chosen? ME?!" He said aloud, surprising himself.

Surion sighed, Yes, and get over it. We have much work to be done. And remember, there is still that rogue egg over in the farm someone mentioned.

He put his finger to his chin, Oh ya!

Miost pulled on some clothes that were scattered around his room, left his room, and making sure not to wake his family, crept into the kitchen. He went to grab a piece of parchment, and was surprised to find his mother sitting drinking some of Torben's famous cider.

"Oh, Mother, I have t--"

"Oh I know. Surion told me all about it when you were sleeping. You are the leader, blah blah blah." She smiled, "And yes I can talk to her. But not as easily as you. You have my blood, and therefore we are connected, so Surion and I are connected, but only a tiny tiny bit."

She paused, "Now go. Your friends await you at the camp." She got up, hugged him, passed him his bow and daggers, and ushered him out the door.

He walked in the fresh morning dew, hoping that Bracdorn or one of the others were awake.

 

The sun's rays peeking over the horizon could see the Traveller's camp begin to stir. Scouts had found a small hill towards the shore and after checking it Brackdorn decided it would make a better camp. The thick forest hadn't grown up around it and from the top they would be able to see any approaching it. The hill was a mixture of sand. earth and rocks. Some sort of stockade could be built to add protection. Bracdorn ordered the removal of the camp to the hill and could be found there supervising and working.

Rayenna crawled out from under the wagon and saw Holon and Beratli near the tent to which Lana had retired. She smiled and waved at them.

"Good Morn, Holon, Beratli. At least the sun shines on our start. I'll see if I can find us some food. I'm afraid it will be cold meats and bread." With a wave she entered the wagon and soon returned with food and drink. Cold meat, cheese, bread and a fruity drink. Enough to feed quite a few people.

Salana flew off to hunt her own breakfast.

"May I join you while we break our fast?"

 

Quickly waking, Lena scrambled from under her blanket and put herself into some semblence of order. She recalled her nightmare and Holon rushing to her side. Heat filled her skin as she also recalled him laying beside her until she slept again.

She went outside to find Porso, curious where the bird had been all night. The red firebird strutted on the ground like a peacock and flashed his long plumage. Hiding a grin, she noticed he was actually scratching for morning bugs near the surface of the ground.

Satisfied he was all right, she set her sights on Holon. "Good morning," she said with a shy smile. "Beratli, you've been busy I see." She nodded to his stubby horns, sharpened to deadly points. "Hello, Reyanna. Oh, let me help with that." She helped distribute the offered food.

 

Breyd woke slowly and sat up her companions were curled to either side, she noticed the change in her clothing and then her hair "Ah, so it has begun" she thought to herself.

*Wake up you two, rise and shine; we have things to do* As she woke them she re-braided her hair now with a metallic sheen and feel to it, coiffing it under her helmet again she stood up, picked her staff up and walked out of the tent looking around the camp. She saw Lena with Holon and Beratli the bond between them obviously deepening, Porso was happily scratching for food and the Owls were handing food; strange Breyd thought how overlaid with some of the travellers was the sign of their order and Rayenna's was so clear.

[I'm hungry] came the impatient thought of Mnemeth
*You're always hungry* came the giggling answer from Breyd
{We Hunt} enquired Bast
[*We Hunt*] came the joint reply

With a triumphant bugle and a large stream of fire from his upraised snout Mnemeth launched himself into the air, Breyd and Bast ran for the jungle.
*We'll be back we're just going hunting* Breyd cast back at the group that had already awoken.

The three moved into the jungle and acted in concert hunting down some of the wild pigs that lived there and settled in to feast, Breyd having a few slices of meat that Mnemeth cooked for her.

 

Holon wasn't very hungry but he still ate he didn't want to insult Rayenna. It was tasty, but he wanted to ask Lena about her dream." What do you think it was about." he communicated to Beratli. The whole morning they had worked on their communication, Holon felt odd but he could talk quite quickly.

" Beratli?! " Holon probed again after Beratli didn't respond.

" Porso said something about her mother but I didn't want to know to much, Lena might only want so much to be known." Holon realized that Beratli was like a melon, hard on the outside, sweet in the inside. " I'll show you sweet." Beratli cried and jokingly pushed Holon of the log with some ease. Holon and Beratli both were laughing quite loudly, when a large blast went in the air. Holon was ontop of Lena covering her head while Beratli perpared for battle in a matter of seconds. After a moment or two they saw the source of the blast, Mnemeth . Holon rolled off Lena with a sigh and help her up. As he brushed of some dirt and twigs he mumbled an apology. Holon sat down again, and pulled out the stick he had been working on and started to carve away. Rayenna had gone off to wash up after the food, and they were all alone.

" So.. last night, what was your dream about?" Holon asked, he wanted to know, but then again he was afraid of what it may be.

 

Looking at the ground, she whispered, "My mother. Mother had visions. The last one she saw held do much evil that her mind snapped. My father loves her and he won't let her die. He used magic to make her into a zombie. I ran away from home because he...because he..." Lena cried openly, covering her face with her hands to hide her shame. Holon merely waited until she was ready to talk again. "Father wants to do the same thing to me! I look like Mother, you see, and he thinks he found out what went wrong to make Mother become a zombie."

It was too much for her. She threw herself against her special friend and sobbed against Holon's strong shoulder.
