Lore, both will be a lot of work, but if you decide to do your thesis on something you aren't very familiar with, it'll take you weeks, if not months more time due to preparation alone. From my POV, it all boils down to how much time you have and/or are willing to spend on it. I'd rather finish it sooner with something familiar and write scientific articles on the other topic later if it still interests you. It's way too easy to get lost in material you're familiar with, let alone one you aren't, which could take you in 10 different directions by the time you get to the middle of it (if you aren't careful, that is).

Anyway, as I said, for me, it's just a question of time investment. The people that really matter (like your family) will very likely be happier the sooner you finish it. ;)

Lore: Follow the advice of your mentor. Your paper should be based on work you already know and can write coherantly about. Writing a paper on a topic that is new may require you to shift mentors to someone in line with the new topic -- as Tal pointed out that could delay your progress.

Something you should ask yourself is 'what do I want to get out of this'? If this is a stepping stone for you, take the stepping stone which will show off you knowledge (which you already have and can present). If this is your final hurrah (and you don't mind taking a bit more time) then shift to the new subject.

I know for my research project and thesis there was no way I could have developed adequate research on my own. I relied on my research professor to put me in the right direction -- I really didn't care too much for the project, but it was a good learning experience. Looking back I would not have done anything differently.

Thank you for all your help guys.
    *hugs T2 and Tal*

You are right, I should stick to what I can write coherently about. I can have fun in my own free time. :)

    T2 - nice reseach field.

Well, thats it for me. I'm throwing in the towel and giving up science. At least as a career choice. My contract ends at the end of the year, and I am not renewing it. I'm going to be unemployed for most of next year, take the time to sort out personal and family problems and hopefully get out of my funk.
