This is a powergaming discussion obviously. Just as Mystra's Chosen said in the beginning, Keldorn is for the goodies and Edwin for the evil players. There's no need to compare them beyond that.

As far as over/underpowered goes, I thank the heavens BG2 is still one of those games not ruined with the lame idea "balance" has today. You have more capable people, and you have less capable people. That's the way it should be with games as well. If you want power then you should have characters fit for that purpose. If you want dialogue and rp, then you should have characters for that as well. And if you just want a whole lot of diversity, then you should have plenty of different characters to choose from.

'Sides this discussion is in the wrong forum. As so many ToB references have proven by this point, you can't make a good discussion out of a subject like this that invariably requires ToB info to be displayed.

As far as my opinion goes here, you can't really compare the two as being "similar" in combat, against mages for example. Keldorn has extreme durability in combat, and is highly capable of taking down any above average threat, even mages. But when it comes to extremely strong enemies, magical or otherwise, it's useless to claim Keldorn can fair better against them than Edwin could. Sure, if you had all the staves and other magic-effect items found in the game on him it'd be another deal. But with higher level spells and some understanding of how the magic system works, Edwin can pour much more power in one battle. And as was already said here, the best attack against a mage is another mage. By definition, Magic is the supreme power in D&D. At least in Forgotten Realms. Even though Keldorn does go out of his way to break this rule, there are spells that make his sword and magic completely useless for enough time to blast him 10 times to hell and back.

The issue here really should be that Carsomyr is overpowered. Especially on ToB side. Though I wouldn't start a debate over that either, for like I said variation is needed. It's not like there's another Carsomyr in the game, so it only adds to it when there's one so powerful an item limited to only a few classes.

Edwin is better than Viccy because, as I've always maintained by ToB he can cast up to 5 level 9 spells!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The amount of times I've taken out a Bhaal spawn with a Timestop followed by a [snip] followed by... you get the picture.

Now Viccy is awesome - far better than Anomen but as a counter-point to Keldorn and in comparison to Edwin there is no contest.

Firstly Edwin's puny strength and lack of charisma are blanced with Keldorn's abundence of both. Keldorn's Wisdom is also extremely high. Edwin compensates for Keldorn's poor dex rating and of course casts more spells than a lich. It's like they were made for each other. Keldorn the archetypal warrior-hero, Edwin the typical evil wizard. Each one a perfect foil for the other.

Another advantage of Edwin over other mages is his high lore.
