I got Planescape: Torment yesterday and I started playing it(I just found Dhall). I have some questions about character generating...

First, why can I not choose an alignment? Is the alignment changeable later on the game? I don't want to be True Neutral for ever...

Second, how is the class determined? By your stats? I spent all points in Constitution and Strength and it says I'm a fighter... Can I be a Paladin?

    And third, what about proficiencies?

Yes, your alignment changes based on your actions. In short, to get:

    1. Chaotic alignment - lie every chance you get
    2. Lawful alignment - Always tell the truth, and make vows whenever possible
    3. Evil alignment - threaten or ask for money
    4. Good alignment - Never threaten or ask for a reward

You can be any of the following three classes: fighter, thief, or mage. You can only be one at a time, but you can switch at any point in the game, as long as you have a trainer, and most of your skills will carry over to the other classes. If you're a level 8 fighter, and a level 9 mage, as a fighter, you won't be able to cast spells, but you'll have the extra HP from the mage. As a mage, you could cast spells, but your THACO would be that of your fighter levels. You also need a trainer to give you proficienies in weapons, but you'll find one fairly soon out of the Mortuary.

Yes, you're stuck as a fighter for the first tiny bit of the game. You'll meet up (or rather, you can meet up) with a wizard chick. She'll convert you over to a mage, if you run some of her errands for her.

There's a thief trainer in the same area as the wizard chick. He'll turn you into a thief, for a price.

After that, you'll be able to switch between the classes by talking to a NPC in your party. You'll have a fighter/wizard that will join you, and there will be a Scottish thief that will join you as well.

It's also important to note that you will get a "bonus" when you reach level 7 and level 12, for whatever class you are at the time. If you are wanting to be a powerful mage, make sure you get both the level 7 and level 12 bonuses as a wizard. Also, don't forget about tattoos. There are some very useful tattoos, that will aid you tremendously in your class; most notably INT and DEX.

Restart your points and put a fair share of points in Wisdom. It ups how much EXP you get throughout the game. 'Nuff said.
