I was cleaning up a bit of stuff on my computer the other day and decided to remove a few things, mostly old folders and the like, but I did remove some things using the 'Add or Remove Programs' tool.

While I was scrolling down the list, I happened to come upon a few things I hadn't seen before. There was almost 10 things on the list associated with Java and combined, they totaled over 1 Gig of space.

Here is what's on the list:

    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    - Java(TM) 6 Update 13
    - Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    - Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    - Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    - Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    - Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Now, do I REALLY need all of this??? I don't actually understand what it does. It usually updates itself and I just click install. I usually just accept because I figured it was an important program.. But am I wrong??

I'm guessing Kit will be the first to help me out here :)

You need Java for certain Java applications, for instance our browser chatroom software is in Java. Runtime Environment you need for standalone applications written in Java, for instance NearInfinity. Most of what's on your list is simply separate updates (patches) for the original Java files, but unless you want to uninstall everything and just install the latest versions, it'd make more sense to just leave it all as it is.

You can have several different Java versions installed, and if you specifically do not need those you can uninstall them and just keep the latest.

I guess it doesn't really matter TBH, I just wanted some extra space. So you're saying it would be OK to uninstall everything and then just install the latest version? Would this cause any problems?

Java always installs a new version while leaving the old versions. You should be able to uninstall all the old versions if you don't want to waste the space.

From my experience with Java; some older applications may use older editions of Java. If you remove the older Java you may not be able to use the application. I have seen this instance at work a few times; a quick fix to the app resolve the issue. I don't recommend removing and installing the latest. I personally would leave it as it is because you may only save yourself 100MB if that.
