Shaman, minorities are overepresented in jail because numerically they do things to own the top position. Personal responsibility should be your first consideration before making flippant comments.... *people in prison did things to belong in prison*.

Take it easy on LKD, he is a little jaded, but it is not easy being a middle aged white man nowadays.

As far as the thread, AYFK...understand the laws and how to keep yourself from a long incarceration for protecting yourself and yours and then open fire. Whatever color they happen to be make sure they don't offer an alternate explanation as to what happened while they were invading your home/threatining your well being.

Shoshino, As far as statistics go...ugh. I like statistics very much but they can be very misused/misunderstood. I've not looked into this at all but the one common sense thing that jumps out is that your family is around to be shot exceedingly often compared to the exceedingly rare occurence of an unwelcomed intruder. If unwelcomed intruders were as common as household family members, the intruders would have a staggeringly higher mortality rate.

 

Let me elaborate as to the canadian disgrace that is currently in existence. Beren is going to come and castrate me, but I feel the way I feel about this.

Now whoever wrote this Wiki bit is entitled to his/her opinion, but here's the way I see it:

Ed raped Marilyn. He broke into her house at midnight and tied her up with her own pantyhose, and proceeded to inflict upon her the worst night of her life. Marilyn's boyfriend Roger comes home and interferes, calling the cops and holding Ed until the police get there. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Ed committed this disgusting crime. What should happen at trial?

Now, before we go on here, notice that the race of all three people has not been mentioned yet.

What I find reprehensible is that if Ed is an Aboriginal, his lawyer can actually bring up the fact that "Aboriginals have a long-standing disadvantage in Canadian society and the effects are felt for generations." and that this is ground for leniency. WTF? Yes, I saw what the Widi article said about serious crimes, but still, it's morally reprehensible. Regardless of his race, or if he was drunk, or if his mother refused to buy him a designer touque when he was 7 years old, or if he doesn't speak English, or if he's lived here for 5 days or 50 years, this piece of trash should be going away for a double digit year sentence -- or, in LKD's ideal world, he should be shot. None of those things are mitigating factors.

Yet they are. Because some groups are overrepresented in Canadian jails, that's grounds for lighter sentences for those who actually commit crimes? That is in and of itself racist in the extreme, and infantilizes minority groups.

In all honesty, if Ed were an Aboriginal and Roger were of European extraction, it would be entirely possible, here in canada, for Roger to end up taking heat for his horribly ehtnocentric treatment of Ed in restraining the raping bastard.

Make no mistake, it gets worse -- if Marilyn were Native and this happened on the reserve, there are those who would say that it's less important than if a white woman were raped. I find that too to be reprehensible. Recent stats show that a Native woman is 7x more likely to be a victim of sexual assault and such. That is horrible. We should all be equal and get equal protection from the law -- and when someone commits a crime against us, we should feel confident that they will be punished regardless of their race, or our race, or the race of the jury and judge, etc.

Equality is my goal and dream.

 

Killing is necessary in light of the screwed up civil liability system. If you kill him, he can't sue you for medical bills for the injuries you inflicted on him, especially the ones that take years to recover from and have expensive costs involved.

If you kill him, you might have to pay for the burial, which is MUCH cheaper than a visit to the ER and a hospital stay.

 

If you kill him, you may end up in jail

 

And his estate could still sue you (on behalf of dependant children, etc.) for damages of whatever kind the attorneys could conjure up.
