    I would definitely recommend IWD. I beat the game last year, and am working on BGII, and they both have their pros and their cons. In IWD you can make your entire party, which is great :) and whoever told you there was no story was either lying, or hadn't played the game. IWD touches on a half-dozen intriguing topics, from ancient Dwarf-Elven-Orc and Goblin wars, to a sort of pre- prelude to the Icewind Dale Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore. If you don't like lots of fighting, stick with BG1, because after that you're fighting your @$$ off :D
